Anyone ever listen to the Dave Ramsey Show?

I love that show. I've been an accountant for 20 years and I use to think I knew everything there is about money. What I didn't know about was behavior. It's been my observation that even a drunk on the street knows about money but doesn't know about behavior. I've been semi doing the baby steps plan. So far I have paid off my car, and 2 credit cards. Sad to say there are more. So basically I'm trying to change my behavior. I still have a ways to go.

Dave's a conservative type of guy as you can imagine and every now and then speaks out against socialism.

Let me give you an example of one of the callers. A lady calls in and is having trouble meeting her bills. Dave asks her how much she makes and I think it was around $30k. He then asks how much she owes on her Mobile Home. Her reply $67,000 Dollars! Both Dave and I scream at the same time. WHAT! Seems she had financed and refinanced over and over. I can't remember his advice after that. 
There are even more horror stories. Many go like, I'm living with my boyfriend and we have 3 kids and I only make $10k a year plus food stamps. You can hear Dave's disgust!

he gives out great practical advice......the problem is.........99.999% of the people hear it.......but don't do anything about it.

the very idea of a credit card these days is just insanity. if you can't afford it.........don't buy it........and if you can......use a debit card.

Great show and good advice. One of the best things I have ever done was listen to what he had to say.           

Just payed off my house this month. It feels great to be totally debt free. I never wanna go back there.

I would be the nazi in my househodl and I know some of the pains of credit cards, but I have no balances anymore.  I only use mine if a) its an emergency b) I need (and I mean need) something asap, but not enough in the bank to cover it.  And this would be maybe 2-3 days from a paycheck.  I deposit a portion of my paycheck into a savings account and my 401k every week.  Now my wife on the other hand*...

*Nothing sexist meant by it.  Men are just as bad as the ladies sometimes.

Yeah it is a great show that anyone can learn something from.

If you watched or listened to anything that your grandparents of the Depression era ever said like both sets of mine did then Dave Ramsey is all blah, blah, blah to me. His ideas are great but they are things and thoughts that I have had ingrained in me from a very young age. If you can't pay cash then don't buy it. Of course I didn't pay really close attention when I went off to college and had 10 credit cards (6 banks and 4 gas cards) and had them maxed out between 2500-5000 each on the credit cards and gas cards was use one this week for beer and gas and the next one next week for beer and gas.

I ended up bad in debt and had to file bankruptcy...it wasn't my fault that all those banks kept giving me credit cards when I only had an income of tax free and reported to the IRS about 2500 a year as a student on full athletic scholarship.

Anyway I paid off all I could and was still about 15,000 in the hole so I filed bankruptcy as a measure of last resort and started over. Now the only thing I have is 2 car notes, a house payment and one 500 credit card with a small balance for emergency situations. Every thing else is cash or it doesn't get purchased. BTW the house will be paid off in less than 10 years from now and then I will be free and clear of it and any vehicles that may be purchased as well.

I've mentioned this here before...but another GREAT habit (that I admit is hard to start but easy to get used to) is PAYING YOURSELF 10% on EVERYTHING you pay for.  new car, rent, gas, food, audio equiptment, utilities......... ALL OF IT.  I call it my "me tax".  I started in my 20's and I'm 47.  you have no idea of how much money you can save in a decade.  it also teaches the lessons of "pay yourself first" and "if you can't pay yourself...you can't afford it"

OK, I have a couple of cards, both pay off in full on the last day due via auto deduction.  They both also give kickbacks and I use either one based on the level of kickback I get.  For example, my Costco Amex card gives a 5% kickback for gas bought anywhere.  That's about 18 cents per gallon.  Overall, I don't carry much cash, my debt is deferred up to a month and paid automatically.  In addition, I get hundreds back on purchases I would have made anyways.
