His music and spoken word shows are very different.
Check them both out, also check out his written work.  Pretty dark and intense stuff. Some of it is written tour journal style, some as a an introspective, some as a state of  affairs commentary.
I'd start with 'Black Coffee Blues'.  Basically it is a collection of travel notes in his own unique style of humor and social criticism. Don't dive straight into 'Solipsist' or 'Eye Scream' as it is a bit much for the young ones, or old ones, to digest until you are familiar with his perspectives.
His writing style and overall focus really shifted after he was the victim of an armed robbery in his youth.  He watched his best friend get killed in front of him.  Hence the dedication on all his work to Joe Cole.

P.S. Nothing says 'good night's sleep' like being awakened at 0130 by the phlebotomist who needs more blood and hits me twice more in the hand literally wiggling around a needle in my veins looking for good flow...  gave me chills just writing that.  :uhoh

TxMom, what album of Rollins' did you find in your son's collection?

Well, I'd say it's a pretty good thing for her that you didn't wake up swinging.

It's the Come In & Burn album.  Actually, I'm listening to it now ~ I do like it.  But it doesn't seem to be the one I saw... which means there's more floating around.

Np, poke and prod as much as they need.  After the care my father received prior to his death at this hospital and the stuff they go through from all the other whiny patients, I do my best to treat them like professionals and help them have a little better day.

On Rollins-Come in and Burn is one of my favorite, that featured Melvin Gibbs on bass.  He is a jazz bass monster and puts a lot of soul in there.  Saw them live when he was in the lineup. Awesome. The production on that album is great as well.  "During a City" has rung true many times here in Vegas.

From that album, I'd go backwards as after that album he diverged from the main band that had been the core -Sim Cain on drums, Chris Haskett on guitar and Andrew Weiss or Melvin Gibbs on bass.

After Come In and Burn he got together with a new band under the Rollins Band moniker, which without him is a 3 piece named Mother Superior (cool to check out sans Rollins as well).  It was good, just not what I was used to.  Straightforward rock, seemed to lack the depth that I heard on the earlier albums such as End of Silence and Weight.

Now, going back before End of Silence there is some session work you can pick up, but the main albums before that you will find very unfiltered and raw.
it might take a few listens to Hard Volume or Lifetime, but it is definitely a man pouring his life out on a record.

Lastly, of note would be an EP entitled Henrietta Collins and the Wifebeating Child-Haters.  Shows some of his humor early on in his career.

Enjoy and welcome to the world of Hank.  Gonna get back to my new career as a pincushion.  :aok
