Which version of Ubuntu did you install?

The latest, 8.04 (Hardy Heron), installs Firefox 3.0 beta 5 initially and then auto-updates it to the full release which came out last week.

I downloaded 8.04 but it didn't seem to auto update as the browser I'm running right now looks nothing like the FF3 I'm running in windows.... Unless it's not supposed to?

The version of Firefox in Ubuntu has an Ubuntu specific theme - it will look a little different. Go to the Help menu and select 'About Mozilla Firefox' and see what version it says its running.

Ah, ok, it's 3.0. Thanks.

BTW, when something says 'download xxx and save it to your disk, then input xxx.....' where on my disk should I save it? There doesn't seem to be any common-sense place to put it.

Visit http://ubuntuforums.org/ for ubuntu related questions. I'm going to guess that not many people know what that is or how to use it.

In Ubuntu (and almost all other Unix style OS's), unless told otherwise save stuff in your home directory. In Ubuntu, you can get to that by clicking on the places menu and selecting 'home folder'. You can also get to it by typing 'cd ~' in a console window.

By and large try and use the package managers to install stuff in Ubuntu. You'll save yourself a whole lot of grief. You can go to Applications->Add/Remove and install applications to do just about anything. If you want to get a bit more advanced Google 'apt-get'.
