What Tiger Model do we have?
« on: July 10, 2008, 10:28:49 AM »
Just curious. I was reading up on the Tiger, and I saw the first version (Ausf D?) and then the later and faster version (Ausf H?)

I think I got the names right, just dont wanna get too far ahead of myself.  :aok

The " Ausführung H" was just a very early designation latter, it was changed to "Ausführung E" in 1943.

The Panzerkampfwagen VI "Tiger" itself changed remarkably little during it's career. See a chronological list of modifications here: http://www.alanhamby.com/changes.shtml

Now it would be nice IMO to have these different models in the different LW arenas. Could be something simple and fun for HTC to do.  :aok

Oh, is there something like that for the Panther and Sherman too?

Be interesting to see.  :aok

I think you may have confused the Panther with the Tiger. The D model was the initial Panther model followed by the A then the G and finally the F

I think so too. But I was reading up on the different Tiger models, and I think there was an Ausf D tiger model. I know the Panther had an Ausf D model on it. :aok

But I'm not gonna argue.  :aok

There wasn't. If you read the link I provided you will see that all changes that happened to the Tiger I during it's lifetime are such minor ones that they would mean absolutely nothing in game terms.

True, removal of the gernade launchers, duel lights . The commanders couppla changed. single gunners sight changed from periscope version, steel road wheels, removal of the air filters and a few others.

What would really be nice is to have the Panzerkampfwagen VI King Tiger with the two different versions represented. The initial with the Porsche style turret and the Henschel style turret.  :rock

They were both Krupp style turrets. But the initial production run of 50 was originally intended to be mounted on the Porsche chassis. But Porsche lost the competition to Henschel and the turret designed for the Henschel chassis was not yet ready for production thus they used the "Porsche" turret on the initial models. This turret had some drawbacks, it needed more raw materials and needed mor manhours to produce because of the shaped surfaces. And it created a shot trap, a shot deflected from the rounded gun mantlet may penetrate the chassis top armor.

AFAIR the initial calling the Tiger Ausf. H or Tiger (H) was a manufacturer code, the Porsche Tiger was called Tiger (P) thus the Tiger (H) was Tiger (Henschel). Does still not explain why they later used Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E (instead of Ausf. A) and Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger II Ausf. B .

You are correct. The Jadg Tiger had  a chassis designed by Porsche as well and did go into manufacture. I only thing a handfull were produced.

The Tiger II is not a later version. It's a different tank.

You are correct. The Jadg Tiger had  a chassis designed by Porsche as well and did go into manufacture. I only thing a handfull were produced.

Of the 88 produced Jagdtiger eleven had a Porsche suspension (305001, 305003 to 305012). All others (305002, 305013 to 305088) had a Henschel suspension (lengthened Tiger II chassis).

Model image with Henschel suspension:

The Porsche suspension was easier and cheaper to manufacture, reduced the overall height a little and weighted nearly 2 tonnes less than the Henschel chassis. But the Porsche chassis was overstressed/overloaded with those 70 tonnes and not really reliable (broken torsion bars due to overstress)

We have the Tiger I,the later version is the Tiger II or King Tiger

The King Tiger was a replacement for the aging Tiger 1's like Snail said "a different tank". The Russians were producing better tanks with thicker armor and heavier hitting guns and a revamped  main battle tank is what was needed. There is nothing on the King Tiger other than the name that is similar to the Tiger 1.
