you guys need to spend some time in the US in any populated area to see what real "diversity" is..  our gangs are diversity personified.. we have gangs of every ethnic group.

We have riots here too.. the people who don't get stabbed or beaten are the ones who have and use firearms.. you can do as you please..  If there is a riot I prefer to be armed.   If I confront a bad guy.. I prefer to be armed.

the only difference is that I have the choice.. as do Americans who dislike guns or have some deep seated fear of them..  they do not have to own guns if they don't want to.   this seems very fair to me..  let the person make the individual choice.

I know you guys think that you have a diverse population but you don't...  In our country one race commits over half the homicides and violent crime even tho they are a very small minority...  I you had them in your population then maybe I would listen to you and your point..

...and you are lecturing the Austrailians...why?  Stick to the US...it is something you actually know something about.

Although I don't agree with the absolute BS laws pertaining to firearms in Australia in the slightest, I would not feel compelled to want to carry a firearm pretty much any where I went, except whilst hunting or at the range.

Whether you believe it or not Australia has a Diverse Population, its just that most of them are more interested in running their restaurant and getting their kids an education, even the illegals.
Diverse does not mean different gangs fighting for their patch(although that does happen, just not on the scale of the US), but different cultures living together.
Hell someone has to pay the taxes for all the Kiwis on the Dole.

I have been to the US and spent time there, have even driven across the country, several times.
The minority that is causing all of your problems is just that, your problem, if you feel that you need to carry a gun, then by all means do.
But don't go thinking everyones boat floats the same.
As far as I'm concerned, nowadays I just do as I always have, just keep off the radar is all.

to quote rob muldoon:

"it was an act of cowardice and i consider it appropiate the australian team were wearing yellow"

a few more pearls from the great kiwi prime minister:

"New Zealand was colonised initially by those Australians who had the initiative to escape"

"New Zealanders who emigrate to Australia raise the IQ of both countries."

An Australian ventriloquist visiting New Zealand walks into a Small village and sees a local sitting on his veranda patting his dog.

He figures he'll have a little fun, so he says to the Kiwi

'G'day, mind if I talk to your dog?'
Villager: 'The dog doesn't talk, you stupid Aussie.'
Ventriloquist: 'Hello dog, how's it going mate?'
Dog: 'Yeah, doin' all right.'
Kiwi: (look of extreme shock)

Ventriloquist: 'Is this villager your owner?' (Pointing at the Villager)
Dog: 'Yep'

Ventriloquist: 'How does he treat you?'
Dog: 'Yeah, real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food and takes me to the lake once a week to play.'
Kiwi: (look of utter disbelief)

Ventriloquist: 'Mind if I talk to your horse?'
Kiwi: 'Uh, the horse doesn't talk either...I think.'
Ventriloquist: 'Hey horse, how's it going?'
Horse: 'Cool'

Kiwi: (absolutely dumbfounded)
Ventriloquist: 'Is this your owner?' (Pointing at the villager)
Horse: 'Yep'
Ventriloquist: How does he treat you?
Horse: 'Pretty good, thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, Brushes me down often and keeps me in the shed to protect me from the Elements.'
Kiwi: (total look of amazement)

Ventriloquist: 'Mind if I talk to your sheep?'
Kiwi: (in a panic) 'The sheep's a f*****' liar……'

LOL.. shaark at least makes sense.. the rest of you?

Let's follow your logic.. you use the US crime rate and compare it to yours in order to show how you need to take guns away from your people..   You use democracy to justify it.. doesn't matter if you take away rights so long as the majority agrees right?

Then.. when confronted with the fact that your homicide rate has not changed but that ours has gone down.. you ignore it.

When told that you don't have the kind of diversity that we do.. you point to a small population of ethnic people who are so outnumbered and have an immigration policy that is one of the strictest in the world and say... see... we are diverse.

what would happen if you had a population that was made up of almost half your population being one minority or another.. maybe with two or three main ones?  do you not think that there would be a tipping point at some point?

then.. your logic takes a real leap..  you say that you don't need guns because.. well.. you are simply a better population than America..    which is most likely true to a certain extent but then..  why take away the guns?    If you are such model citizens why would you need to?  why not just let everyone decide if they want to have em or not?   you had one incident did you not?   you reacted like hysterical old women.

On a tour of Australia, the Pope took a few days off to visit the coast for some sightseeing.

He was cruising along the beach in the Pope-mobile when there was a frantic commotion just off shore. A helpless man, wearing an All Black rugby jersey, was struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a 25 foot shark. As the Pope watched in horror, a speedboat pulled up with three men wearing Wallabies rugby jerseys.

One quickly fired a harpoon into the sharks side while the other two reached out and pulled the blue semiconscious Kiwi fan from the water. Then, using long clubs, the three beat the shark to death and hauled it into the boat.

Immediately the Pope shouted and summoned them to him.

"I give you my blessing for your brave actions. I heard that there were some bitter hatreds between Australian and NZ rugby fans, but now I have seen with my own eyes that this is not true."

As the Pope drove off, the harpooner asked his buddies,
"Who was that?"
"It was the Pope" one replied. "He is in direct contact with God and has access to all of God's wisdom."

"Well" the harpooner said,
"he may have access to God and his wisdom, but he doesn't know s**t about shark fishing. Is the bait holding up OK or do we need to get another one?"

You've yet to provide any statistics that back up your claims.

Just because we don't have your over-publicised 'n-word' problem doesn't mean that there are not racial tensions here. You have 'n-word' and Hispanic gangs... we have Asian and ethnic gangs. Same chit, different smell.

Why take away the guns? Because it works. People are idiots and idiots with guns is never a good thing.

Like I keep saying, Australia doesn't need guns and we're doing better than you guys are without them. Your country is completely different and our policies would not work there. The sooner you understand that, the better. Enough with 'hysterical old women' nonsense. You have fun with your NRA meetings and your pro-gun lobbying and we'll just carry on with what works. How about that?

Comparing Australia to America is oversimplifying to say the very least. We speak the same language but we are very different people with very different attitudes and circumstances. Your gun debates have no place here.

[edit] My apologies if this seems a little blunt or harsh. I'm just tired of some of the nonsense that has been thrown around in this thread. I'm not particularly attached to this country but some of the watermelon in here is enough irritate me.

xasthur..  no need to say your sorry.. I did not find what you say harsh at all..  blunt is good.

I did find it to be ignorant and irrelevant tho...  you claim that gun control works.. it stops homicide right?  yet.. it did no such thing.

You are right to say that our countries are different..  you are saying that people are stupid so they should not be trusted with guns.. that seems about right.. we are a nation of individual rights tho and the exact oppossite of what you think..  that people can be stupid but government is always evil.. to be used in small doses.

Sorry to be so harsh but to me..  the truly stupid people are those who don't trust each other but love their government.

A bloke walks into a bar in New Zealand and orders a shandy. All the Kiwis sitting around the bar look up, expecting to see another visitor from the Northern Beaches of Sydney. The barman says, "You ain't from around here, are ya bro?"

The guy says, "No, I'm from Canada."

The bartender says, "What do you do in Canada?"

The guy says, "I'm a taxidermist."

The bartender says, "A tixidermist? What the hick is a tixidermist? Do you drive a tixi?"

"No, a taxidermist doesn't drive a taxi. I mount animals."

The bartender grins and yells, "It's okay boys. He's one of us."
