banana, when you apply more power, the prop automatically changes to a higher pitch - it takes a bigger bite out of the air.  The prop speed is regulated by a hydraulic or electromechanical device in the prop hub which controls the pitch of the prop.

Actually if you are going from idle to take off power, the RPM will increase.  At very low RPM the prop doesn't put enough load on the engine to effect the RPM.
