WWII plane makes belly landing at Pungo Airfield in Va. Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH ---  A vintage Russian WWII fighter plane made a belly landing at the Va. Beach airport in Pungo.

According to Va. State Police, the plane’s landing gear was stuck.

The Yak is settled at the end of the east/west runway at the Va. Beach Airport, which is a private field used by the Fighter Factory to maintain, display and fly vintage and replica aircraft.

It's home to the Military Aviation Museum.

No one on the plane was hurt, but crews are on the scene cleaning up spilled fuel.

Virginia State Police is handling the investigation.



That just sucks!!!! Looking at the pictures though it looks like they should be able to get her back in the air.

Depends if the guy cut the engine before he went in. If not, it may have caused some major engine problems (from what little I know about engines).

No I've seen this bird up close, it's all original. Fighter Factory went over to Russia awhile back and bought the thing brand new still in the factory shipping crate, brought it back and assembled it. It was never flown prior to coming here. The story the guys from FF told me was the Russian government found 20 of the things sitting in storage and decided to sell them off complete with spare engines and parts that were also in storage with the planes.

That's the story anyway as I was told.

That one looks like it should be fairly easy to fix it up. The engine was turning according to the prop blades. It may not have been under power though, just windmilling. Glad the pilot set it down with no injuries.

I was thinking the same thing.. Not necessairly about nukes, but how the heck do you just happen to stumble uppon 20 Yak's?

 :rofl  Yea....cause those guys learned all about aviation accident investigation in police academy.  I'm sure the FAA said "nah, you guys can handle this one". :lol

While nearing Oshkosh in 96 we heard about a Yak-3 that had bellied in near Fond du Lac airport.  The pilot ran out of gas, glided, but bellied in 3/4 mile short.  I think the system gave him a "Ditch" on that one.  I saw the ditched plane from a C-45 a couple hours later.
