What I'm saying is that t is the American way.

Buy more fuel efficient cars, but drive them more often or farther.

Just like we buy "reduced fat" junk food, but eat twice as much.

Ever buy a new motorcycle?  Fun, wasn't it?  How many extra hours did you drive it that SAME day?  How many extra people did you go visit to show it off?      Just a general example and not a personal attack at you, Kaw.

If I bought a new mustang, I would do the same thing.  But how much gas would it take compared to the motorcycle?  I might be able to show off on the bike on only one tank, but the mustang could take a fill up or two.  The point still stands, after that first week or so you would go about your normal business and the bike would make a difference.

My conclusions only come from the behavior I witness.

Another example:  Today at the grocery store I was in line at the bakery getting a cake for a co-worker's birthday.

The lady in front of me was holding up the line for 10 minutes trying to find a no-sugar/no-carb/no-fat cake because she was on a diet.  Did I mention that she was about 400lbs?   I wanted to grab her by the head,  look her directly in the eye and say "How about just plain ole' leaving the sweet cake at the bakery?  You might get better, faster results that way.  Stop shoveling groceries down your neck and the weight might come off."

or the guy who idles/cruises in the parking lot for 10 minutes while trying to find a parking spot 2-3 spots closer than he could park right now?

Never underestimate the stupidity of some folks.  SUV's may not be selling as much right now but the manufacturer's are handing out gas at $2.99/gal for a year after purchase,  as an incentive.  It costs less, so to most people, it justifies using more.
