game crashing
« on: July 31, 2008, 01:10:18 PM »
Arrrrgghhhh.  Just back from 6 month deployment...downloaded all updates....game would freeze up with verticle lines on monitor...had to reboot PC...would not allow back to windows.  Uninstalled game and re-downloaded game....game is up...then I get glitches on screen as it freezes...has odd spots...hard crash to desktop....the next time it had what looked like white outlines...then crashed.  I was in tower only each time I tried to log in.  I never actually got in air.  I am running windows XP with dual AMD CPU's...I am using the "easy fix" by running AH in Windows 98 (which has always worked in past).

Sounds like the video card crashing due to power or heat problems.

A DXDIAG output would be helpful.

Hmm, try setting the "Maximum Texture Size" in the game's "Video Settings" to 256.  Might want to try a different driver for the video card as well.

Tried both of those...neither worked.  I ran 1024 texture size before I left 6 months ago and never had a problem.  Is one of the updates going to cause me to have to run it in 256?

ahhhh...I leave 6 months ago with same computer I have now.  My wife made zero changes to it.  I d/l updates for AH...I crash everytime I log on...locks up like a tv that the station is not coming in (lines going across screen, no clear picture).  I have to manually re-boot PC because I can not get back to windows to close out AH.  I uninstall AH and re-install game.  No go.  I d/l newest drivers for vid card and lower in game textures...no go.  I install SP3 for windows...try again...no go. I turn down sound accelerator to 3/4...no go.  I turn off anti-aliasing and the anisotropic stuff...no go.  Lower refresh rate...nothing.  Arrrgh.  What else is left?

Some of the newer drivers are junk for older cards. Make sure you have good airflow too.

Then also your psu could be having issues.

Come to think of it you may have a corrupt driver and uninstalling the drivers and cleaning any old files then reinstalling the drivers you know worked could fix the problem. I use 'driver cleaner' when uninstalling/reinstalling and it really does help.

any other ideas?  I have rolled back drivers to known good ones.  I then updated with newest.  Not sure how to check if power supply is going bad...but has been fine with everything else I use the computer for (not any other online multiplayer games).  I am about to just go buy a new video card and hope for the best.
I have been able to let game load and even get airborne before it crashes.  I have to manually reboot pc to get out of the crash.  ALt+f4 does not work, nor does the windows key, or cntrl+alt+delete.
