there were senators trying to ground the F15 fleet after the missori national guard eagle went down.

the 50k ft per minute climb rate is accurate too. it was the first fighter in the world to go wheels up, then verticle immediatly off the ground, and then accelerate past the speed of sound.

I believe that's what confused him. :)

The quote about the "F4 being proof that given big enough engines, a brick will fly" comes to mind.

i don't believe so.

i would have to go out in the garage, and climb up in the rafters to find the book, but i recall reading that the eagle was the first with the power to weight ratio to allow it to go supersonic immediatly after leaving the ground.
 no wheels up, accelerate a little, then pull nose high. wheels up, point nose straight up, and continue to accelerate.

 it was built because the air force thought that the foxbat was intended as a fighter, whereas it was actually an interceptor.
