defrag problem
« on: August 01, 2008, 09:20:48 AM »
I can't get the stock winxp defragger to work.I think I know the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.I was using a defragger called ultimate defragger, and I uninstalled it.I believe that caused the problem.I've read elsewhere that this can cause grief.Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I can't get the stock winxp defragger to work.

Does the defrag program start? If not try this.
Click Start, Run, and paste in the line below

%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc

Press ok.

If it does start you may not have enough hard disc space to run a defrag.
I think you can reinstall disc defragmenter with a windows cd using add remove programs if it's completely knackered.
We shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be.

Open "My Computer", right click on the C: drive, go to properties. Choose the second tab over ("Tools") and try "defragment now"

Barring that, try checking under Windows add/remove programs, under the "add/remove windows components" button and make sure defrag is listed as one of the installed components (I can't imagine it wouldn't be, though. As far as I know it's part of the operating system).

If that doesn't work try booting into safe mode (hit F8 repeatedy during boot up, after the POST screen but before windows starts loading) and run it from there.

I finally got it fixed!I found a thread on the intertardnet, and I reinstalled it.I had to go into the inf file and then hit install. One of the independent defraggers had completely uninstalled the win xp  defragger!
