Sound Boot / Loss of vox
« on: August 07, 2008, 11:23:06 PM »
Salute All,

Alright.  Not a computer newbie here.  Have built my own systems for years.  Problem developed after making a dual boot system.  Both HDD's have been used on a strictly win98SE system.  Due to needing more memory for some GUI development, I formatted the D: drive and installed WinXP Pro on it.  I upgraded memory from 512 to a gig.

I need the win98 drive only for Aces High as I still use my CH Gameport gear.  I use the Force FX joystick, Pro Throttle, and CH Pedals.  Have never been able to get them to keep calibration in WinXP, so have always used 98SE because of that.  I have used both the default floppy discs from when I originally purchased the gear and have used the newest gameport drivers downloaded from the CH site.  Same problem in WinXP with the spiking and calibration, so Win98 has to stay.

Now then, to the exact problem.  When flying in WinXP, I do not get booted at all.  I can fly the entire night with no issues.  However, when flying in Win98, I will be flying along, happy, then all of a sudden I will get a white flash on the screen.  My instruments will get white boxes over the top of them.  About 30 seconds later I will boot.  There are times when I will just boot whenever someone is talking on range vox.  Havent noticed it happening when on a tuned channel.

I originally thought.."video card overheating."  Added air, changed through 2 different video cards (Nvidia's.)  Newest drivers as well as old reliables Both standard from Nvidias site as well as Omegas I have flown with for years.  Same problem.  Flying fine, someone talks on range, white flash, white boxes on instruments, boot to desktop.

Alrighty then, its a soundcard problem!  I have now been through 4 different sound cards.  A C-media 5.1 card (have flown with this one for years.)  A Soundblaster Live Value! card (flew with it a while as well.)  A Diamond Xtreme 5.1 card (purchased this one 2 weeks ago to fix the problem..it persisted.)  Finally a generic 6 channel card from TigerDirect that I got in and tested today.  Same exact problem.  All 4 cards have gameports which is why I use them.  I have an Audigy and an Audigy2 sitting here but no gameport on those.

I thought it might be an IRQ conflict.  The computer wouldnt let me manually change them.  I started switching the soundcard through different PCI slots.  Had a conflict on 2 of them after changing them around but even on the other 2 PCI slots, with no conflicts, same thing happened.  Sound card currently shows IRQ 10, Graphics card shows IRQ 11.  Looked through my Bios and was unable to assign the cards to different settings there (but I could have missed something.)

Ran a DxDiag.  Everything looks OK to me, but Im no expert on it.  I will attach that readout as a reply to this posting for you to look at.

The most frustrating thing about this entire episode is that I have done this before.  I have made a dual boot in the past using 2 different harddrives (just like now) and never had a single hickup.  The only, and I mean ONLY difference between this setup now and the previous one is the additional memory.  I cant possibly believe that memory is the culprit  :(  Btw, Win98SE on C: drive , WinXP Pro on D: drive.

I have tested this with both default sounds as well as a modified pack I made from Mitzu, USRanger, and lots of others.  Have used them for a longgggg time.

I have worked on this for over a month and a half.  I absolutely have no more ideas to fix this on my own.  Please help.  Computer specs will be in the next post.  Thanks for any and all you can do to square me away.

Salute All,

I believe the problem is fixed.  After reading through the post and looking at the DxDiag, I decided to test a couple of more things.  I disconnected the d: drive and flew AH.  Same problem happened.  Reattached the harddrive, switched out the memory to the previous 512 stick.  Worked flawless.  Well thats weird.  I take out the 512 and put in a different stick of 1gig.  Same problem.

Needless to say, I will stay with the 512.  Cant understand why that is the problem (the motherboard can handle 2gigs of memory).  However,  98SE definately isnt liking it.  I always knew about 98 not recognizing a gig, but never experienced this type of error while running it.

Oh well.  Thanks for looking at this.  Just wanted to give feedback on the fix in case anyone else runs into the same problem.
