Microsoft Flight Sim X
« on: August 14, 2008, 12:03:05 PM »
I have had Flight Sim X since it first came out.  I got the Acceleration package, and love it.

I down load planes off of Simviation.com but i notice some planes are horrible.

Was wondering does anyone download planes for the game and if so what site do you guys use.

Any help would be great.

i'mīnot much into downloading stuff for fsx, i bought a few Aircraft & Helis though.
Im more into Heli flying, especialy with TrackIR Pro, BUT i can suggest you to try
out FS Recorder, a small tool who lets you do your own formation flying in FSX!
Google for it and look on Youtube for FS Recorder made video. Its really fun,
not easy but fun.

Try flightsim.com. It is true that some people make horrible .air files and some can make some that are as close to the real thing as you can get on a PC.
We used to use th 1% aircraft done by the 714th research squadron for Combat Flight Sim.

AvSim.com has a lot of the same things as Simviation, but the search engine is a bit nicer on AvSim.  The sites to download from really depend on what you want to fly.  If you're into older airliners, California Classic Propliners ( http://www.calclassic.com/ ) has some excellent planes, but compatibility might be a problem.  Premier Aircraft Design ( http://www.premaircraft.com/ ) does good work, and they are supporting SP2/Acceleration with their latest releases.

As far as payware goes, Abacus has cheap planes, but you get what you pay for.  Some of their older ones just act plain weird with Acceleration.  But I have a lot if fun with their Aviat Husky.  Just Flight makes some quality stuff.  Flying Club X was really nice until Acceleration came out, but they are working on a patch to fix it that should be out "any day now".  If you want to add some purpose to your flights, Cargo Pilot will keep you busy for hours per day.

If you want good aircraft for Flight Sim X, you have to get commercial ones - and only ones from reputable companies (ie: nothing from Abacus).

I highly recommend the following:
A2ASimulations (formerly Shockwave)'s Wings of Power

Flight 1's Spitfire Collection:

Just Flight's Tiger Moth:

Air Chief Marshal, Elite Top Aces

If you like freeware add-ons, go with flightsim.com; I like it, has quite a bit of stuff.  For payware, I recommend Aerosoft.  Got some really great work from them.

As far as what kind of computer you need to run FSX pretty well, I have a single core 3.14 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, and an ATI Radeon X1650 512MB, and I can usually run settings of medium to medium high with decent framerates, but that's with little or no traffic.  One big thing is you need lots of RAM (and a little processor speed doesn't hurt either)  You'd be surprised to find that quite a few lower-end GFX cards can, for the most part, handle FSX, memory is just a big need for the game. :aok

Thanks guys.  I down loaded from Simviation.com a Piaggio Avantie (sp).  I love that plane and currently trying to fly around the world in it.  Problem is sometime the auto pilot goes off course a few degrees.

The planes I am looking for are.

C-17
777
Airwolf (had it for the last MFS)
Some more private Jets
F-14
Couple more Medium distance multi engine props.

Those are the planes I am currently looking for.  Hope I find them with the site you all gave me.  How much do buying planes usually cost?

Jebus,

After 10yrs of flightsims and probably 100's dollars worth of professional addons it can get to be very expensive once you start getting into purchasing pro addons. For FSX imho there is only two professional companies out there that make planes worth the $$

And thats, PMDG and Level-D... Others like Wilco Publishing are good but just not cutting edge like the previous two. Captain Sim are good but only their C-130. Flight1 have some fantastic props and the excellent ATR 72-500. Stay well clear of any software classed as "light" it's expensive and a waste of money.

The most fun you can get out of FSX imho is flying on Vatsim (which is free!). When you take it online is a whole new experience and far more rewarding then flying offline.

To really get involved and start a virtual pilot career so to speak. Start off with the basic twin props and fly online, start off with small airports and work your way up. Once your comfortable with ATC/procedures  move to a Turbo Prop like the Flight1 ATR 72-500 to begin getting use to working with FMC. By now your'll have clocked a few hours online and know ATC,Airport SID STARs procedures pretty well.

Then start looking for a Virtual Airline to join and learn more from them with fly ins etc but also sharing vast amounts of knowledge. VA is like joining a squad research and ask questions search the AVSIM forums for feedback on different VA's try join one that's very well established. And preferebly based on a real world airline. If you have a few hours on vatsim and show that you've made a gradual learning curve rather then jumping into a 744 and unable to read an approach plate you will be highly sort after.

Then start getting into the heavies, by now you'll know whether you like short range 737s,A320s etc. Medium 767s or Medium/Long 744s once you start getting into flying 744s in and out of busy airports you'll thank all the time you spent hours with the ATR 72

Before you know it you'll be able to join the likes of Polar Air Cargo and flying 742s all over North America and Europe.  :D

As for professional addons other then planes I'd stay clear of all of it for FSX. My order of importance/pref for addons and FSX would be as follow:

Flight1 ATR 72-500
Level D 767-300
PMDG 747-400

FSG Global Mesh
Global LandClass

That's it. If you like flying Australia then without doubt Full Terrain Experience is incredible and the best scenery addon combining mesh/landclass and textures ever released.

You can easily spend $1000s of dollars on addons, take your time and only purchase the very best.
