You can choose what folders and files are included.

Go to "indexing options"

That is true.

I just never found the service to be worth the overhead it needs to run.

From Vistas "help" section:

"What files are indexed?

By default, all of the most common files on your computer are indexed. Indexed locations include all of the files in your personal folder (such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos), as well as e‑mail and offline files. Files that are not indexed include program files and system files.
The locations that contain those files are not indexed because you rarely need to search those files, and so not including them in the index makes your searches perform faster."   [/b]

Problem is the AppData folder in Vista.  It is not part of the Program Files directory and that is where all applcations get forced to put folders and files when UAC is running.

Hard to know if that is getting indexed or not as Vista has a tendency to access the hard disk for a lot of other reasons than the index service.

It still is a service that has a high overhead for resources and very little benefit to have it running.

I've found out that if you try to search anything work related with Vista they 100% sure will not be included in the default search, you have to click the 'slower' search option every time.

So the 'fast' search is nothing but a useless gimmick for opening MS Office with a couple keystrokes. Quick startup bar in XP rules.

Autopatcher is back and very much alive.  Just check the link in my previous thread.

Now it downloads the files directly from microsloth. It's still in beta mode, but I've been running it for months now with no problems, on both XP & 'vista obscured', with no problems.

I use Autopatcher, it works with both XP and Vista and allows me download the updates, (from microsloth), and then to select which ones I want to install.

You can select which updates you wish to download already when manually updating. I don't see the point.
