I probably should have read more of the post :) If you're going to build the house from scratch and not convert something existing, look into insulated concrete forms. It's far superior to a stick built house in terms of both durability and efficiency. Do you have running water on the property? If so, you could easily drop down some off-the-shelf turbines and have plenty of power. The maintenance is basically keeping the intakes clear. With the off-grid, battery backed-up systems they have now, you can run all sorts of generators at the same time.. hydro, wind, solar.

There's a magazine called Home Power you can find at Barnes & Nobles. There's a lot of good info in it.

Ineresting.  Thanks.  I'll prolly spawn a different thread to explore this further.

Lazs

Nat Gas, Crude, Atomic, Coal, geothermal energy and Hydro all power electric generators. This is one way, we can't turn electricity back to coal or gas, ect. Therefore electricity will be the most common, most abundant, and therefore most likely the cheapest form of energy. I am not saying don't use nat gas but there is a cheaper alternative.

That was Lazs dripping sarcasm because everybody with half a brain knows good ol' T. Boone is really in it for the land grab & government subsidies. If T. was really in it to help us all out, he'd be building Nuclear plants and bringing us electricity at a far lower cost per kWh, and without the huge tracts of land required.

Sorry I misunderstood, I didn't know who T. Boone was.
