That never made sense. A luftwaffe hard pressed for personel and hardware trying to tradeoff plane for plane against Americas industrial might. Stupid plan from the beginning.

Aircraft were not as much a problem for the Luftwaffe as fuel and pilots.

From what I've read the idea was that a lighter fighter can cut a wing or a tail of the heavy bomber and survive to eject.

They've reinforced the fighters (or tried to) to a point that it could fly through the fuselage of the bomber and emerge on the other side to be able to eject.
