Anybody think truck convoys too tough?
« on: October 25, 2001, 09:55:00 AM »
They were insanely easy to kill in the first release, a couple of .303 rounds were enough.  Now they are toughened up a bunch but to anything other than cannon-fire/bombs they seem impervious.

I tried to strafe one with a Hellcat last night, poured a lot of .50 into the lead truck and never could get it to explode.  I ended up rtb after getting lots of point blank hits and hits at convergence on the lead truck with no apparant effect.

With the trucks moving at about 85mph, the low trees, and wildly uneven and undulating terrain these roads take, it's tough to strafe these truck convoys at some places.  It should be possible to take out a truck with less than 4-5 passes of 6*.50's though.  There's no way a .50 cal plane could kill alll the trucks the way it is right now.

thoughts?  Killing trains seems easier....

trains and convoy trucks are both way to tough

they need to be soft targets.

now if the panzer was as tough as the convy trucks that would be nice  :)

I agree Cit.  I heard the other night of someone at the tracks in a Panzer after driving some distance to intercept a train.  Point blank shots and the train passed by unscathed.  Last night I poured the .50cal into a truck for no result.  I thought these trucks were filled with ammo and fuel supplies... shouldn't they go boom or at least get disabled.  Lots of great WW2 footage around showing this sort of thing.

popeye,
Truck convoys head from depots to airfields.  Trains head from a central factory to the various factories in the heart of each country.  The trains are easy to spot from the air, truck convoys aren't unless you are fairly low.

A good place to see trains on the Mindanao map is north of A12.  Take off there and follow the tracks up from the City (which is just NW of A12).  If you knock out a city building you can be sure that a train will spawn to the north and be headed south on those tracks that extend north.

Just before the last patch I was doing jabo practice in MA on the trains. I dropped a 500lb egg next to the track when the engine was there. The crater overlapped the track but no damage to the train. It's either a direct hit or nutin.   :(

Trucks will blow up to .50 cal hits.  I was up last night in a D pony and with about half of my ammo left I killed 4 trucks by strafing and rtb'd with some ammo left in the 2 inner guns.  I was hitting them at around 100 - 400 yds (conv is 300-400 yds for me).

Trucks could be a little softer but not much IMO.

50cals should eat trucks alive, they should easily set them on fire.

AH 50cals seem buggy when it comes to killing GV they can detrack tanks or in the case of the super M16 50cals kill tanks outright yet they have trouble with soft unarmored trucks.

This is bizzare and is getting very very old.

HTC whats up with the 50cal vs GVs or whats so tricky with finding a good logical GV damage model.

I think that this had more to do with indestructible convoy/train units reappearing around corners after most of the convoy/train had been destroyed than any bug with 50 cals.

That'd be my guess anyways.

What if the damage model will be the same as on panzer?

You can't kill the vehicle with .50's , but you can flatten the tires!!!  :D  :D  :D
