Support for Color Blind? -A plea for mercy!
« on: January 02, 2001, 02:29:00 PM »
HTC, is there any plan to add some kind of support for Color Blind pilots?

I have problems (if not total blindness) seeing red icons on green background, and all planes except the white p-38 and the white JUG against the green landscape (HUE blindness I think its called).

Any chance of adding some kind of color switches for us?

Right now I either have to dive below the con so I can see it against the blue sky (and be able to shoot) or slap my screen a bit and make it become yellow tint (torn cable LOL)... and pray I see some movement down there *grin*

Others have asked for this as well, and I trust that is slated for a release in the future, filed in the "Job Jar".  However, meantime I have a work-around for you...turn all icons off.  Then shoot any con you encounter, if its friendly the software will tell you immediately by placing you back into the tower.

Tac quite a few of us have the same problem and HTC have indicated they will accomodate us in the future.  However it can't hurt to keep this one at the top of the forum list.

Funny note:  At airshows or when hunting I almost always spot planes or game before anybody else.  It's only with computers that color vision seems to make a difference.

And here I thought I was the only one having the problem. I've found that most of the time I can't see squat unless I get real close to the con. If I'm above them against the ground or water I can make out anything at all so I have to wait till either a) an enemy gets close enough for me to see an icon or b) I have to blow alt to get below them and see their dot against the sky.

If it's nighttime/twilight forget I can't see anything. I can't even distinguish gradation in hills and spend alot of time running into them.

Never heard of Hue blindness.. I may have to look into this as I might have it and just didn't knw it.

Most color blind people, depending on what colors they are blind to (red/green, blue/yellow, or something else), and if they are blind only when colors get mixed (some of us see green and red as the same color, while some others, like me, will not spot something if the 2 colors are put together) also have some kind of hue or tone blindness.

To test it just get a spectrum of gray (or color of your choice..test most of them to see what colors you have problems with) tones and see how many different tones you can pick out. Then get a "normal" person and see how many they spot. then check how many tones there really are. if you get less than half you got a problem =)

Its interesting that I found out I had tone/hue blindness too when I was in my art class and the teacher was screaming at me to use different tones of gray for the shadows and other stuff in my paintings. You can imagine my total confusion as to what the hell she was talking about LOL!

Never heard of Hue blindness..

I was employed at a printing company which had a salesman/customer rep that they suspected of having color vision problems and to avoid discrimination liability the shop had mandatory 100 hue testing in a color corrected work station for all employees.

The 100 hue test has four boxes (red, green, blue, yellow)  of 25 color chips each in graduated hues you must arrange in the correct sequence.

After taking the test I found out I was hue blind in the upper spectrum of red and green, as well as color blind in the traditional sense.

I have difficulty in AH with the red icons against the blue sky "fading" out and causing loss of SA,another big problem is the dusk, night, and dawn periods.

I can`t differentiate the radar dot colors on the clipboard map and will end up augering 99% of the time if I try to play during these periods.

I am red/green color blind, but it seems strange to me. I can tell the difference between red and green traffic lights and other red / green objects. My problem was trying to see the numbers in the pattern of circles they show you when in military entrance medical processing.

The tester asked me what number I saw on the paper, all I saw was a whole lot of dots... No military for me
