the power of Prayer
« on: September 19, 2008, 01:32:53 PM »
We have a news anchor here in the Seattle area that has been fighting against brain cancer for a decade.  She recently made a well publicized return to broadcasting and shortly therafter had to leave again for another surgery and dose of of chemo.  Someone left a prayer on a message board deidcated to the story:
====

Dear Lord Be with Kathi and her family. Keep them all safe and free from harm. Guide all their foot steps and let them walk in your ways. Bless them with joy, peace, and happiness. In Jesus name, the Son of the Living God, and through this name the gates of Hell will not prevail, amen and amen. Kathi you will not die. In the name of Jesus I command this cancer be stricken from your body and never to return. In the name of Jesus I pray amen and amen.

Eh?  Not sure what your point is.  Prayer doesn't hurt, and if billions of believers on this planet are correct in their faith, it might actually help a little.  Not sure how that makes people who are willing to pray for someone else's welfare "whack jobs"...  They do seem to be taking the person's condition more seriously than you are and are at least doing *something* to try to help...  Is that what makes them whack jobs, that they are trying to help someone in the only way they can, by praying for them?
 :huh

Honestly, I don't understand the point you're trying to make.  Are you disagreeing with the entire concept of people helping one another, or just criticizing this one person's specific prayer?  Or are you really supporting the effort and trying to be sarcastic about non-religious people who call religious people whack jobs?

If you're just criticizing this one person's prayer, you can be assured that most people in the world would answer your critique with a hearty STFU and a suggestion you either go **** yourself, or pitch in and help out instead of being nasty about the whole thing.
 :(

As for my own opinion about the power of prayer and specifically that one prayer you quoted, it does seem a bit silly to command god in the name of Jesus to get rid of someone's cancer.  But since I don't have anything to offer, why should I crap on someone else's good intentions just because I personally don't think their approach will be effective?  It certainly will do no harm, so I use my "inside voice" instead of my "outside voice" for any critique of their efforts...

He forgot his [sarcasm] tags on the last line he wrote in his post.

Yeager, I have no qualms with religion.  Just when anyone wants to mix it with our politics.  The USA is not a theocracy.

srry, I was directing that post at athiest type people who disparage people of faith.  Was sarcasm, yes.  I was impressed with the prayer and I really do hope it helps.  The gal who is sick has had a long public battle with cancer and we all want her to survive and live life to its full extent.

Understood Bong.  I do sympathize though with people of faith who see their nation as constantly digressing away from their core beliefs and further into temptation and sin.  Its only natural for those folks to want to do things to to protect and preserve their views....just as you do.

But its all relative.

I would tag my name to this opinion as it pretty much reflects how I feel as well.

Well, alrighty then :)  Sorry to bust your chops.  I guess I'm sick of seeing people crap on everyone else when they have nothing to offer themselves.

Spiderman is stupid.

BTW, your avatard looks like the traditional symbol for "woman", but without the arms.  That means your avatard is a green chick without arms.  Sorta kinky, but not exactly my thing.  But I wouldn't call it stupid.  I'll just use my inner voice to think "Engine is stupid".

Oh damn, that's my outside voice.

I kid, I kid :)

Nothing, just wanted to support your point about people crapping on others without actually contributing. :)

I believe prayer helps immensely. However, I find it offensive that this person had to write it out and then use the word command. I think only God commands and then at his discretion.
