radio overload
« on: November 06, 2001, 11:09:00 AM »
With the numbers we see routinely in the MA now during peak hours, the "country" radio channel is getting overloaded.  Also, much of the traffic is "chat" rather than "game", and just serves to scroll the useful info off the screen.

I'd like the ability to tune the radio to ONLY the channels I want to receive, including NONE.  To facilitate comms for newbies, just default one of the radios to the country channel, but allow players to turn it OFF, if they want to.

Anyone see a downside to this?

I assume that this would be in addition to  the .squelch command? It would be nice to have your radio settings control what you see in the text buffer.

Although the message traffic is a bit much, I can see that it really about old friends re-connecting and getting reacquainted. I am guessing that this will settle down in the next month or so.

There's nothing wrong with talking to people in AH, even if it's not related to the matter at hand (capturing X airbase, etc).

In fact, people talking, getting to know each other, forming friendships--that's what separates AH from a boxed game.

I think AH needs MORE people talking and chatting, not less of it.  Communication needs to be easier.

I have no problem with people chatting.  As you say, it's part of the game.  However, I want the option to turn it off, on my FE ONLY, so I can pay more attention to other radio traffic.  Providing that option to me will in no way interfere with anyone's ability to chat.

I've seen this too... usually it just takes a gentle reminder to "TAKE IT PRIVATE".  Alot of the newbies don't realize they can tune a radio channel to a specific person (RTFM), or that clogging the comm buffer is considered bad form.

Does .squelch 2 work in 1.08?  I haven't tried it yet, but in 1.07 it didn't work.  I agree we need more squelch features.  When there's 200+ people on, I have to squelch channel 1 and 6 to make sure I don't miss anything important.  Here's what I'd like to see:
  • The ability to squelch channel 2 and channel 3 would be nice when doing squad ops.
  • Squelch list file would be nice so I could squelch certain players everytime I start AH.
  • Increase the number of players you can squelch.
  • .listen all works, so why not .squelch all?
  • A scrollback option in case anything important passes you by.

".squelch 2" doesn't work in 1.08.  (I'm not sure that it ever did.)  Even if none of your radios is tuned to channel 2, you will still receive it.
