I guess I can safely assume that the current map is only temporary.  It is only marginally useful now and is not useful at all for plotting precision courses, etc.

Any of you Alpha Tester guys wanna set me straight?

Agree with you that it's not accurate enough.

Even zooming the map right in you still have the plane icon taking up too much space. Would rather see a crosshair or something.

And is there any chance we can have the map stay at its previous zoomed-in level when we next call it up?

"not useful at all for plotting precision courses, etc."

Hehehehehe

How do you think real pilots determine their position?

Well funked,

It just so happens that I AM a real pilot and we determine our position in many different ways, such as radio Nav, GPS, and yes, good ole dead reckoning.  In order to accomplish good dead reckoning, one must have a hyper accurate map.  In "real" life, these are known as "sectional charts" and one does plot "precision courses" on them.

Just thought you'd like to know.

So Foggia, when you flew in WWII, did you find the GPS system to be pretty accurate? I heard they had fewer sats back then and the system didn't always get your position within a meter?

Oh, that's right, this is a WWII sim...they only had radio, and they used folded up lousy maps, landmarks and compass to plot what they thought was their position. So the map should be what...accurate as hell for position?

Just pulling you leg...

I didn't fly in WWII, but my Dad did.  They didn't really use charts for bombing missions so much as they used radio "beam" techniques.  Nevertheless, you'll note that I did mention "dead reckoning", which is pretty much how we'll have to do it here, except that they do provide us with "GPS" in this sim with the little plane icon.

I don't really understand why this "historical accuracy" thing is such a big deal.  If the plane icon where removed, 90 percent of the players would be unable to find their way to and from their targets anyway.
