888 NAS F4F-4
« on: September 14, 2008, 06:47:56 AM »
This is a British Fleet Air Arm Martlet Mk IV of 888 NAS. The US style markings were applied to FAA aircraft for Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of Vichy French North Africa. The Royal Navy were not too popular with the Vichy French in the area since they had destroyed a large part of the French fleet there in 1940. So it was decided to dress up the RN 's aircraft to look like USN ones in the hope the French would be less likely to shoot at them.

The F4F template is an old one with a fair bit of mirroring and distortion, so this skin has a few compromises with the camo layout. The skin is up at http://www.ah-skins.com/ if you want to take a closer look.

Interesting fact that I never knew about falsely marked planes. Nice find.
