The piper Club (Grasshopper) called Miss Me score his first kill on April 1945.  He spotted on German aircraft (a Fieseler Storch) and Miss Me drew their .45-cal pistols and dove on the storch with gun blazing.  Amazingly, they damaged the German aircraft forcing it to land. As Miss Me land and the Americans jump out and took captive the startled Germans.  Four more and the Miss Me pilot would have been a ace. 

So it is possible to kill a aircraft w/ .45

I used to shoot the neighbor's kites down with my pellet gun when I was a kid, usually took about 60-90 minutes to put enough holes in it to bring it down... I am an ace if this counts.

I know I sure as Hell wouldn't want to see an enemy L4 overhead, especially if he also saw me.

I do that too.  In fact, one of the FSO i end up shot down on axis field.  Luckily all the acks where destroy.  As the axis where landing i decided to hide right next to the rearmed pad.  The first person to park on the pad i pop him with four shot and killed him.  Needless to say, that pilot was the axis CiC.lol  And i did not know about the rule of killing people with the .45 on FSO, FORBIDEN.
