When I decided to get a new car for commuting I chose to buy a car that offered the most miles/gallon available. That led me to the Honda Insight but even then there were not any available or at least the Honda dealer tried to tell me that but I did find one the same day I also found a used Honda Civic Hybrid. The difference in the two was small but the Civic had a back seat while the Insight was two seats only. Sixty-two mpg for the Insight and fifty-five for the Civic (or so they claimed) made me feel there wasnt too much difference and the cheaper used car would make the return on investment realized more quickly so I went for the Civic. At that time I was driving seventy-four miles one way to work and I was able to get seventy-four mpg by acceleraing slowly and not exceeding fifty-two mph. With normal driving I got sixty-two mpg so I didnt try real hard to get the best gas mileage.

There wasnt an American made car to compete with that and there still isnt.

Now I dont drive so far or so much and I last bought gas in July and wont have to again until November.  :aok

The Prius is an electric drive with gas assist and only gets 52mpg in the city as long as you dont exceed 35mph. At highway speeds it sucks gas down much harder and at 75mph gets about 35mpg.

The Civic is gas drive with electric assist on acceleration. At 75 mph it gets about 59 mpg. In the city at 35mph it gets about 82mpg but with constant stopping and accelerating in traffic that usually drops to around 50mpg.

Both use nickel-metal hydride batteries which could be expensive to replace but according to consumer reports... there has yet to be one replaced.

With American made cars having so many parts made overseas I dont think it matters much anymore. Its hypocritical of them to talk like that anyway as just about anything anyone buys anymore comes from overseas.

Voss, I find myself agreeing with you..

It would be pretty tuff to replace 'em since there is no such thing as a lithium-hydride battery.

American hybrid technology is leased to American auto makers by Toyota. The technology leased and used by us is Toyota's 1st generation only. Toyota hybrid technology is now in their 5th generation. I worked for Toyota for awhile, they paid well and have created around 386,000 jobs in the United States. They use as many of our parts as they can and donate huge amounts of money.
All something Honda does not do. Unfortunately, many people buying Toyota's look for the where it was made sticker and those in the know would rather choose one made in Japan. Does not say a whole lot of positive things about us.

Unions more than greed push American jobs over sea's.

Greed has kept American technology at a snail pace. Big car makers decided it was in there best interest to keep cars moving and on the road for a specific time only. Many parts were and are still made to break after a certain amount of time. At the big four the word used to be "if we can't get them out they can't come back, inflate the price and sell them cheap.

In the late 70's through the 80's cars were made to rust out...another greedy plan that worked but at the cost of a bad reputation.

When you say buy American now your really saying buy 3rd world country parts that are sent here to be put together by some Americans while the rest are put together outside of our borders then shipped here. What percent of an American car do you think is actually American made?

Thanks for the correction but I think you are in for one yourself?

honda does not just assemble parts from japan , they actually make stuff here.

10 Millionth Honda Transmission Produced in Ohio
RUSSELLS POINT, Ohio – Honda’s large transmission plant in west-central Ohio
reached a major milestone today when associates built their 10 millionth automatic
transmission. Honda Transmission Mfg. of America supplies these transmissions to Honda’s
auto engine plant in Anna, Ohio, where they are mated up with the engines for delivery to
Honda auto plants in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio, and in Canada and Mexico.
Located in Logan County near Russells Point, Honda Transmission has manufactured
transmissions for nearly 12 years. The 10 millionth transmission was produced for a Honda
Accord and will remain on display in the plant. Nearly every department was involved in its
production through its final assembly and quality inspection, including casting of the aluminum
case, and forging and machining of its high-precision gears.
