Requests to join...........
« on: December 23, 2001, 08:55:00 PM »
HiTech, Pyro, can we PLEASE change this?  The way it is now, and I know others have commented or posted on this, the box pops up with no warning, and if you are in a fight, you are f*cked!  Had a guy do that just now in the CT, might have been a newbie, never seen his name before.
Can we try just putting it in the text buffer or something?  Or put a block on requests, anything to keep this crap from happening?  Etiquette or even common courtesy would be to ask the guy you want to join BEFORE sending the message........but with the influx of newbies recently, it seems etiquette is a thing of the past...  :(

Type .showjoin in the buffer Eddie.  Join requests will show up in the buffer instead of in your face.  This has been around for at least one version....maybe 2.   :)

Yes sling, but its not permanent. I use the dot commmand when I start seeing newbies asking to be gunners or when someone I dont know starts asking to join someone.

But many times, it just dont happen.

Last night some lil' salamander was constantly asking me where I was , what I was flying, what this and what that and how to.. and in the middle of a fight against Ecke in 109 and Miko (sp?) in his 190, both GOOD pilots in their rides, and I in a spitV I was unfamiliar with.. and this $#@$ newbie started join requests.. declined and he put up another one.. and again and again... I had to break off for a little bit to type the dot command.. then he kept at it.. squelched the fediddleer and accepted his join. I dunno what other crap he was spewing at me on private or country channel, im glad I didnt read it.

Would be VERY usefull to have the join request setting be saved permanently unless you disable it.

i dont know what to tell ya if it happens in a fight. i say if you get the chance tho..accept em! then fly in circles and waste all of your fuel sight seeing, land, rearm, and do it all over again. they're stuck. and pretty much cant do a damn thing about it. except alt f4. but i can almost garentee you that you wont have the join request problem from that person again    :D

Yup, I typed that dot command in, and the same guy (had to be the same) that was pestering Tac did it again, right after I put the command in.
I thought about it, accepting his request, but at the same time, I did not have a free hand to click on the "accept" button.....then the guy asked me on the country channel "What is wrong with you eddiek?"
I really think the guy was just trolling, as later he started asking where everyone was from and how old they were.....then he said he was 11 years old.  Either he was lying through his teeth, or he was just there to mess with people.
Oh well, ya see that in all online games, people not really there to play,  more to just mess with your mind.........

I just click on accept unless in a bomber. Mostly newbies wanting to see how it all works. I had one attached for 3/4 hour once & forgot he was there.  :D
If im in a bomber I do the showjoin command but I think you have to do it every time u get in a differnt plane.

Funny, no one ever asks to join my flight

Either cuz I stink, or cuz I have crappy interpersonal skills.

Tac even suggested to the guy Eddie is talking about to join me, and I never recieved a request, I must be a real meanie  :D

Showjoin is broken, from what I've seen

I type it in first thing whenever I enter the area.  I see the first request in the buffer but if someone tries a 2nd or 3rd time, I get the pop-up menu again.

I'd like to see AcesHigh remember my preferences/squelch list.

I got the same requests from this guy that eddiek did, and I accepted the 3rd one.  I think he was genuine and not trolling, because suddenly started asking for help because he "didn't know the controls".  I told him to sit back and relax and then took my 190-A5 into a wild, low level dogfight against Myelo in a Spit IX.  We held our own for a while, but a well-flown Spit IX is eventually going to get the upper hand on a 190 in that situation.

Shot up and with engine smoking, we made a beeline for our home field.  He was back there shouting encouraging words like, "oboe's in trouble!" and "Airfield ahead!".

I found it all a little amusing and I think it'll be awhile before he asks to join again.
And I made a new AH aquaintance out of it.

I think he is just unfamiliar with the game, and didn't realize how obtrusive JOIN requests can be.

I had a guy send me a join request while I was sitting in a tower, looking at the map.  I accepted, let him sit there with me.  I purposely sat there a while then.   :)
