Scoring explained in help and training
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:35:46 PM »
The #1 rule to scoring  "DO NOT let scoring take the fun out of flying this game!" Scoring can be addictive and for some, can change your flying styles, attitude toward squad mates and easily ruin fun here. With a little forethought, it's best to just let it happen all on it's own or pretend it does not exist at all.

By my forth month I had all the tricks in play and tried to apply them to a squad. I kept some notes and passed them on but in the end it made some people very miserable. Score has it's dangers and like the game itself, can also become addicting... so beware. If done right it can be very satisfying and takes very little fun from the game if any at all.

<S> Tool,

Speaking from personal experience as a squad CO of a group that has played together over ten years, I would contribute that in my honest opinion emphasizing anything at squad level that is score based is like introducing a cancer into your group,  opening the door for animosity & discourse to creep in.

Guys become competitive over kills, & accusations of kill stealing can rear their ugly head.  Flights lose cohesion as everyone gangs the first bandit they see because they are all hungry for a kill.  Fellows will alter their approach to their flights because they are more worried about their score than clearing a squaddie.  Or on the flip side, gents will squabble that their high score flight was messed up because they died trying to rescue a squadmate who didnt fly 'smartly'.

All those events are contrary to my goal of having a group of friends to bs with, fly together with and have fun doing it - the true meaning of being in a healthy, thriving online game group.

Checking score can be a great way to monitor personal progress ( i.e k/d ratio, gunnery percentage ) and HT provides us with all we need to do so in an extensive format, both web based & in game. If you try to change this to a group approach, then as you stated some will find it not their cup of tea, or they cant compete or 'hang' with other squad mates, and people start drifting into different directions.

Scoring is divisive to a group.

If you want, you can find a detailed explanation of how to rank high on either a personal or squad basis in the help and training forum. But remember, some of you will be stepping into the dark side of the game . MUHAHHAHAha   :lol

Remember to keep Salvan's quote in mind. It's more important to know than score itself.

Well said! Personally I've tried to be a score hound but frankly milk runs are just not that much fun. Flying with great mates is. Helping them accomplish a mission is. I've never had a second account but that would be empty to me to kill basically yourself repeatedly.

I flat-out don't care about my score, my perks, my K/D ratio. I play for fun and comradery. It does not matter if I lack "skill" in most aspects of Aces High. Real life and responsibility takes presidence, so score in a game is such a nonsense triviality to me.

I wonder if there has ever been a situation where 2 squad memebers where going for rank, and where at 1 and 2, and 1 accussing 2 of letting him die so he could take the 1 spot.

Best bet, as mentioned, is just forget about score and play with fun.  No number can substitute for a fun and a high morale squad.  Flying for rank, though some are ok withh it, just seems to have so many negative things attatched to it.  And when it's all said and done, and you get number 1, then what?  Risk vs. Reward kinda thing.  Best just to fly around and worry about fun than worry about how many kills you have, what factory can be milked, and what is the eaisest way to get a pt boat to within rocket range.
