depending on what you want to do, plans range from $5 a month to $25 and more
I use westhost.com - decent bang for the buck

I did a heck of a lot of research.  Most companies suck.  I went with bluehost.  Absolutely fantastic service, support, features, bandwidth, always up, for only $7 a month.

for a personal site I'd recommend using the free blog hosting at wordpress.org or blogger.com.  easy to get started, free's nice, and you can always move it if/when your site outgrows them.  bluehost is one of the better not-free hosts, lots of bells and whistles and you're not restricted to a simple blog.  But, if a simple blog fits your needs, why pay?

If you have a DSL connection and an old computer running Windows '98 or newer you could host it yourself.    :aok

True, blogger.com would serve the majority of folks just fine.  You also can host pictures on flickr for free and link them from your site; upload and it creates a few sizes and gives you the code/url in one click.  Also allows captions and comments.  Along the same lines, use YouTube for you movies.

Bluehost.com is really good in the "bang for the buck" department.

Be careful as you do your research. There are companies out there that promise much but deliver only the minimums.

There are web forums for many of the companies that are out there, check those out and see what their customers are saying.

DO NOT TAKE CUSTOMER REVIEWS AS TRUTH! There are far too many companies out there who post customer reviews on their home page that are blatant lies. One company I am familiar with went so far as to create forum profiles for non-existent customers just so there would be off site reviews. Its a common scam used by many of the start-up hosting outfits.

Many of the hosting outfits are actually "mom and pop" businesses. In other words, individuals purchase server space as an affiliate or reseller and sell a portion of that space to folks like you.
If a company lists its server sites as being in the Dallas/Fort Worth or Houston area, its a safe bet that they are using "The Planet" for a server farm. The Planet is one of the largest server farms on the planet with data centers in several locations.

check out mine at http://www.fasteasynet.com , I start at 3.99/mo for 10GB space and 300GB transfer every month... If you get the hosting and domain name at the same time, you can get the domain name for $1.99.
