1394 wire

Where the hell is this thing supposed to plug into?

My case has one but I see no corresponding named jack on the motherboard.
the plug fits the USB pin layout on the board but should I plug it in there?
Or should i just leave it unplugged  (its not plugged into anything at the moment)

The 1394 Firewire is (was) the most common digtal camcorder interface. If you don't own a digital camcorder with that interface, there's no need to have the port or the connection to your motherboad.

Edit:  All there severs are slow apparently.  I'm getting 2kb/sec downloads of this.  Will check back later.

Do NOT plug firewire into USB headers! EVER!

You can short stuff out (even up to killing your motherboard) that way.

You need a 1394 header to plug it into, or a PCI card that has fireware (an add-on).

The fact that your case has one doesn't mean your motherboard has one. The case is just ready in the event your motherboard supports this. Many mobos have firewire on the rear panel but very few seem to have firewire headers on the board itself.

I believe his motherboard specs say that his mobo has Firewire.  Alas, Gigabyte's download site is as bad as Asus's.

dependng on age of motherboard, you might have individual pins  type header or a header plug housing , which for firewire is usually green/light green where as USB is most times Blue, if I remember correctly..

as Krusty stated never plug USB into firewire or firewire into USB pin connections on a MB, .......

my new ASUS board has the latter newer type of header plug housing  for all connections, USB, Firewire, front audio/mic / case & HDD connections..... where as my older ASUS has the individual pin type connectors for everything.....

Yea wasnt sure about hooking it up to USB so I didnt. I havent been able to find anythng on the board itself to indicate it was for the firewire.
And it makes no mantion of it in the manuel that came with it.
I just wanted to double check to make sure I wasnt missing anything.

Now if that memory would just get here LOL

I stand corrected.  And all the PCI slot Firewire add on cards that I've seen do not have the "motherboard/case" pins on them.  If they do have an 'internal' 1394 plug, its the standard 6 pin 'external' plug.  See pic below.

I made an error as well, somehow I got turned around between a com/serial ( green/light green ) and the firewire which is Red for pin headers or pin/plug housings.....

Fumar, I have an add-on PCI card for firewire which has 3 female, one male * er 3 big and 1 small plug ) and also 1 pin header on it.......

No big deal for me.
I just wanted to make sure there wasnt a set of pins for this thing to plug into I was unaware of.
Im not likely to use the firewire port  with any frequency if at all.
I may on a whim sometime pick up a card to plug it into.only because Im a stickler for having evertyhing available be able to work. so long as it doesnt slow things down. Even if I dont need it. LOL

Thanks for the info and this may be a good subject to have available on forum for someone else.

Its not hard to see how someone less cautious might want to plug it into the USB connector.
As everything matches up perfectly.
Design flaw IMO. They should have used either a different style connector. Or a different pin layout.
