Simple Request For HTC
« on: April 03, 2000, 10:54:00 PM »
Could we have offline missions in AH?  For example, air-to-air, air-to-ground, ground-to-ground, ground-to-air, and so on...  The enemy and number could be chosen by the player (6 Panzer4H, 3 P38L, 4 B26B).  Along with this, I would also ask for offline options such as Invulnerability, Unlimited Ammo, Unlimited Fuel, No Crashes.  Not all of these have to be implemented, but I hope you get my general point.
I, and many others I'm sure, are considering a switch to AH from the "other" sims.  An offline practice arena with those options would let us get a handle on the AH flight models, gunnery, etc.  I personally sucked at flying the open bets, and would beg to have a place offline where I could practice.  In real life, pilots had practice before going into combat, and offline practice would do just that.
So please, heed my request.

Rendar,

for offline 'missions' you need AI.  At present there isn't any (except in AAA).  That's a big, big, request.  It'd be nice though.

Anyway, there already is a place you can go offline and practice.....click offline instead of online.

Or.....go into the training room on the server instead of the main arena if you want other people around......

Apparently v1.02 will include 8 player support so you don't need to log into the server.....if you wanna practice with mates or hold your own online wars. (don't quote me).

IMO, asking for offline AI is too much. But offline play should be an option to train more things than just takeoffs and landings. IMO, "offline" is just the perfect option to train our aiming skills whithout the need of being connected for hours to TA or H/H.
The simplest way I see to implement this is as follows:

1 - Put a lot drones along the map, tanks, fighters and bombers. This seems simple, just a X,Y,Z coordinate per drone and rendering it.

2 - Give each kind of drone a pre recorded path. This should be simple also. Just take off with a plane, turn record ON, do several maneouvers (climbs, dives, turns), turn record OFF. On the recorded file we have all the info to translate the moves to a drone.

3 - Animate those drones. Just like when we play a recorded film on AH video.

4 - Set up an option to "rearm/refuel" your plane in-flight during offline, for example ALT-W.

5 - Give an option to start at a desired heigh over the selected field in offline missions.

Well.. no need for AI though... if it was for training, wouldn't it be acceptable to add commands like ".add spitIX 12000 N F2"

Which would generate a spitfire IX over Field 2 at 12K alt headng NORTH.

The spit would be on autopilot flying a straight line..just like the target drones used for training

.add panzer 0 W F4   (tank busting time!)

If this was avaliable offline and in the TRAINING ARENA , it would be wonderful

Actually for added realism the correct ai startup command would look more like this;
".add spitIX 12000 N F2 Whine "Guns","F4u","Ho","Dweebs"

Allowing your robotic enemy to complain in channel 1 automatically

The AI does not have to do anything fancy, just fly or drive, maybe turning gently from time to time.
