The role of vice president
« on: October 04, 2008, 07:03:25 PM »
An interesting thought occured to me about Palin's comments on expanding the role of the vice president. She said she wants to take a more active role in presiding over the senate. It almost sounds to me like she envisions the vice presidency evolving into more of a prime minister role, taking a leadership position in the legislature, while still retaining some executive powers.

It is a very scary prospect that could possibly lead to complete Presidential control over the entire government. If she, or any other Vice-President, were to make that decision, what is to stop them (or the President from granting the Vice-President) from later deciding that since the Vice-Presidency is "flexible" enough to have some "control" in both the Executive and Legislative Branch the position should also have some partial control over the Judicial branch as well (to be able to sit in on their meetings and voice her or the Executive branches opinion concerning State cases).

The Vice-Presidency has been clearly established within the Constitution, and what Cheney, and now Palin is hinting at, is completely illegal and quite disgusting.

Cheney (and by extension Palin) are completely in some mythical lala-land about the purpose and position of the Vice-President. Fundamentally unconstitutionally and, along with the myth of the "unitary executive", completely cnotrary to the wishes of the Founding Fathers. Cheney wants a theocratic fascist government - one in which him and his buddies are the primary beneficiaries. Most people would call him functionally insane.

I think Palin meant show wanted to add a feminine touch to the Senate. I also think you are dwelling on what they said about the position just a little too much. The Senate elects a temporary President of the Senate so that the VP doesnt have to be there all the time (and wouldnt be anyway). VPs are basically powerless unless the President dies in office anyway. If you want to stick to the original Constitution you should know that rather then the popularity contest we have now the VP would come from the first runner up. So if Obama won and McCain was in second place then McCain would be the VP. Of course that would also mean there would be about 200 people running for the office (in the nomination process anyway).

What did Palin "hint" at?

mg is expanding on what she said. What she actually said was that as a potential Vice President it was her hope to 'be given more authority.' She was pointing out the flexibility of the position under the Constitution and maybe just maybe she was hinting that in modern times the position could use a review. I dont like what she said but I dont think she went as far as mg implied.

I perked up when she said that in the debate.  There was a reason the founders didn't give the VP any sort of real power.

Note that the lead in to this is missing. I think she is trying to think on her toes and trying to burn the time up more then go in any real direction.
