Emergency preservation & restoration of war memorabilia
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:59:34 AM »
Took a trip with my fiance down to Galveston this weekend.. it's still in pretty rough shape. I'll have pictures and videos on my youtube site hopefully later today.

My parents followed in their own car, and took a detour to Seawolf Park, home of the gato class sub Cavalla, and the USS Stewart. The park is still closed off, however they came across some older gentlemen sitting on some chairs, guarding a cargo container that looks like it just went through an atomic bomb test. Inside that container, prior to the storm, was a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia that was destined for a museum that was to be built on the site.

The storm relocated the container over 100 yards down the street, tore it open, damaged everything inside, and scattered much of the contents all over the streets. The older gentlemen have been posted up for a month now to prevent any looting. They're still finding items from the container all over the place, in bushes, up in trees, etc. So, my dad called the gentlemen behind the raising of the Hunley, who turned him to the curator for the Monitor. We're still waiting on that call back with some emergency info on how to preserve, restore, and repair much of the items.

Has anybody done this type of work before? Is there a resource we can get pointed towards to get this project rolling? Any info is appreciated.
