HELPPPPPPPPPPP
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:18:23 PM »
allright heres the scoop, i brought a very  good friend into AH, he has been playing for awhile now but is always squeaking about his screen pauses, so we have been working on his system.

his vidio card has a gig of ram,
he has 4 gig of memory(i know xp only excepts 3.5),

he got it down so when he is playing AH, only 11 proseses are running, still saying screen pauses, so i go over today, sure enough screen pausing when there are no other nme or friendly cons around ,  i dont get it my system i have around 15 proseses running and i only get screen pauses if its a huge furball, even then they are not enough to complain about.

heres what is wierd, when i look at my task manager,it bumbs back and forth from 0% to 2%, heck right now its staying at 0%, with 28 processes,

his even with the 11 processes, it jumps regularly from 0% to 7% to 13%

someone have any clue? i have none, we have done everything we both can think of.

he is ready to quit, and that would suk,

anyone smarter than us out there, a helping hand we need.

Do you have a sound card, or are you using on-board sound chips?  Are you using enhanced soundpack files, or default sounds?

HiFi sounds and on-board sound chips will drag your performance way down, and could cause low frame rates and screen pauses.

Intel i7 5820k, Win7 64-bit
NVidia GTX 970 4Gb ACX 2.0

Looking at the way his cpu usage is jumping does sound like onboard sound or a sound card that uses a lot of cpu.

That type of CPU usage is usually spyware/malware/virus activity, but can also be caused by network related activity.

Typically, spyware/malware/virus do not show up in the task manager.  They hide behind the rundll32 process or, possibly, the svchost process.

that' be my guess..  The first thing I do with any friends who ask me to look at their computers is make sure AVG, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are installed and automagically updating, then run full scans.  (I also install zone alarm, but no scan req'd...)  It's pretty painless if you set things up to be able to log into his computer from home useing remote desktop, VNC, logmein or something similar, then you can run the scans at your leisure or before you hit the sack.  FWIW, I use logmein.com's free offering to access my clients computers, highly recommended...

If it's a real bad infection you might have to use a tool such as Hijackthis and submit it's log to one of support boards that will examine it for you...
