Take off direction
« on: October 19, 2008, 07:07:01 PM »
One further question, Is there a preferred direction to take off and land? I would hate to be flying the wrong way and ruin someone else's flight.
I fly Spits because I'm  Brit, It's in our DNA to fly Spits.

Doesn't matter.  No friendly collisions. And no wind in the Main Arenas.

I prefer taking off away from the direction I'll actually be heading. Gives me an extra thousand or so feet of altitude before I turn on course, so I'm less likely to encounter an opponent while still climbing.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Any which way is fine. I prefer to take off directly towards the fight. Saves time. But you can takeoff sideways, from the hangar, or land on the taxi ways. Up to you.

Spend a minute in the tower, hit F3 and then F8.  Move your view around and see if a runway points you straight into a hill.  If you want to up a goon or bombers, DO NOT takeoff in that direction.  This is why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiUjCtt52Ow&NR=1  :D

Now that's good advice.  I've done that too many times.  Even a fully loaded P-47 can have trouble taking off toward a mountain.

I'd take off heading UP and land headed DOWN.   ;)
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

F5 then F8 gives you a better view of things ;)

If I'm in a fast climbing plane, I'll take off directly into the fight. If not, I'll up the opposite way and climb 2 or 3K before turning the other way, this way I will not run into any enemies on the way.
