Quick question on P-39
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:15:50 PM »
I have a quick question on the 37mm on the P-39 Airacobra. Does anyone know if the rounds are ap, he, or a mixture of both. Also, how effective is the P-39 at killing tanks with guns alone? Any info would be helpful.
 Thanks in advance :salute

I could be mistaken, but I believe the P-39s cannon uses HE. It's worthless against our tanks, though you may be able to pop a lucky shot into the turret of an Ostwind or Wirblewind and knock out their guns, and take out PTs, jeeps, 251s and M3/8/16s.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

The 37mm will knock out a tank's engine and shoot off a track. Enough hits in the engine and they will explode, especially Panzers and M4s. I picked up 3 kills strafing Panzers and M4s with a P-39Q Saturday evening.

The other thing is you have to be a good shot. I've had a lot of lucky kills with it, but sadly, I didn't flim :(

39's tater is also great for buff hunting. One tater at the wing root or engine, and it's on fire

Better off with the iL2 or the Yak9t 37mm.

Better Ballistics, better bang, faster  rate of fire.

But what I've realized about the Yak 9 T and the IL2's 37s is you dont get a tracer for every round.

Yep, the 37mm Oldsmobile cannon was pretty crappy. Glad they decided not to add it to the production P-38 models.

Just an additional question about the P39 (P400 to be more precise):

Does anyone know about a 6 .30(3) gun installment on them? It seems like the first export models the British recieved were fitted with these, along
the 20 mm Hispano. However, this installment is barely ever mentioned, just the usual 4 .30s + 2 .50s...

yes i agree, i think the p-400 did have x6 .30's

Would be interesting to see the 20mm option's .50's to be turned into .30's

AFAIK the P-400 is just a P-39D with a 20mm instead of the 37mm. Unless a model of the P-39 had six .30cal the P-400 didnt.
