Argh...help!
« on: October 21, 2008, 02:38:58 PM »
Had a on and off problem for some time with 5 second freezes, and sometimes total 'pull-the-a.c. cord-type freezes, since I got new mobo year or 2 ago (Didn't want to splurge for new cpu--AMD3200, so I tried to find the exact same ASUS mobo, but this one is slower, which prolly causes this.

ANYHOW, now I have new prob. Was adjusting graphic range to shorter range the other night, as I was done looking for gv's, and WHOLE frikkin screen went white..faint colored letters could be seen thru, but no mouse icon, etc.) Reset pc, NEXT time in AH it did the dreaded cache generation (still all messed up and white looking)...waited the 10-15 min for that to finish....nada still all white. Caould barely see AH icon on task bar after alt-tabbing...closed program..pc instantly back to normal. Re-installed AH, same thing

AMD3200, 1 gig ram, FX 5700 agp card...ASUS k87-MX mobo

here is DX diag stuff, is greek to me (ran this while AH was up)

Remove the "video8.cfg" file from the Aces High II "settings" folder (default location C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II\settings).  That will restore the default video settings.

You have 3 sound cards which is going to cause some issues as the Windows sound system will call every one of those sound card drivers to find out which one is actually generating an interrupt after a sound plays.

As longas you do not get crazy with various game settings, then the computer (aside from the sound cards) should be able to run the game well enough.  Make sure you are not using the high resolution texture pack.  Do this by setting the "Maximum Texture Size" to 512, or less.  Actually, I would be using 256 with that video card your have.

Make sure you are not using any custom sounds!  The devices you have could cause major warps to happen if you use high resolution sounds.

Wow, apparently un-installing the game and re-installing it doesn't change those settings--after deleting the cfg file, it was showing hi-res pack (thumb must have slipped while moving the range slider)

Thanks for replies! will try the driver-cleaner thingie

Keep in mind that onboard sound chips will reserve a piece of the CPU and RAM for themselves, cutting them off from use by the rest of the system. Having a dedicated sound card (in an expansion slot) will solve that problem, as they have their own processor and memory.

Yah I have an Audigy, took it out some time back, as I only use headphones anyway--I was getting many freezes when puffys would explode, such that I simply avoided being near cv's. Slightly less with onboard, I may go back and see how it is now. Anyhow, game worked fine last night, nary a freeze. (Set it at 512, NOT optimizing terrains) One prob I have with expansion slots is that 1 of the 3 butts up with 1/8" of cooling fan on AGP vid card, thus hindering cooling. (other 2 cards are extra network port for print-sharing, and the dial-up modem--onboard network port is for internet sharing from said dial-up modem.)

The two optimization options use up more system RAM.  If you are system RAM limited, then reducing the texture size, along with disabling one or both of those options will make the game run better.

I bought 2 1 gig sticks a few weeks ago, freezes went away, but then the PC started getting blue-screen of death...went back to the 2 512 sticks...(I initially assumed this was due to drop-kicking pc across room, but with original memory configuration, it does ok, with a few hundred meg left after trimming processes.) Regarding 2 other sound cards--1 is a blue-tooth-usb thingie that allows wireless headphones (usually kill these services anyway, and the 23$ headphones couldn't suck enough), and the other is from the dial-up modem...sure sure what that is about

You can kill the services, bu tthe drivers are still there and they are still having an impact on the sound system.
