F4U Request
« on: April 07, 2001, 01:28:00 PM »
Would it be possible for on of the F4U (prob the D model) to be given its full fuel loadout instead of what we have now?
It says in the plane web pages that the wing tanks have been removed for a better JABO loadout.
I don't think we need 2 JABO corsairs.  Would it be possible to keep the uber CHOG fuel loadout as it is, but restore the F4U-1D fuel load?

this includes:

237 Gal fuselage tank
62 Gal leading edge wing tanks
reserve tank (I couldn't find specs on the reserve tank or even locate it in F4U schematic but I remember Greg Boyington referng to it in his book).

The F4U burns fuel so fast that range is really limited unless you use drop tanks and even then climb rate suffers and you have to reduce rpm/manifold pressure if you need to stay some place for any length of time.  Otherwise you can only climb to alt, run in, fight for a few minutes then you have to be thinking of getting home to land (not that I land that often - HTC could probably perk landing gear for me)

DON'T TAKE THE ROCKETS OFF OF MY DHOG!

Dang.. that would not be good.

Some people that fly the DHog, still like to JABO without having to fly the CHog.

If I remember right it was the -1A that had the wing tanks.  The -1D had the tanks removed from the factory.  Ours should be right on to specs.

Yep, no wings tanks on the 1D.  We will do a -1 too, but that won't be useful for jabo.

Please give us 2 for 1.07
-1A and -4
-1A will make a sweet plane for furballs but lacking the great views of of the -1D.  I pity the enemy that thinks I am in a -1D when I am flying my -1a
They -4 will be an awesome perk plane. It's speed will rock and be surprising nimble.  Both will make an excellent addition to the planeset

How the hell did this post get past me?

Anyway I knew Pyro was going to do a early -1. Don't be surprised to see a birdcage canopy on it either, with two tone paint.

Performance is a concern concidering that the -1D still isn't right. How much worse will the -1 climb?

Wouldn't a F4U-1 climb BETTER than a -1D, since it lacked a lot of the ground-attack hardware??

Heya,

The answer is it depends.

If it is an early model -1 with a bird cage canopy then it would not climb as well because it did not have water injection that means no combat power. Also the F4U-1 series had an upgrade of the prop design that most do not realize. This improved climb significantly even though it remained a three bladed prop. Keep in mind only the first 800 F4U-1's had a birdcage canopy and was a true F4U-1.

Then came the -1A. To include water injection, spoiler on the port wing to reduce stall effect and an uprated three blade paddle design prop. It did not have the ability to carry rockets althought it did have a removable center line bomb rack for tanks, bombs etc.

If your looking for a increase in performance then you will probably be looking at the -1A. The -1 will probably just give you better turning ability while being about 15mph slower at sea level with a max speed of 400mph at 20K. Although the best performing bird of all of them in climb and speed (not withstanding the -4) was the -1D. However we have a slightly muted version currently in AH.

Thx for the info F4UDOA--I've never been aware of all the differences between the -1 and the -1A.   And, actually I assumed that of HTC were to model an earlier Corsair, I'd be a -1A.
