Gunner Positions differ from bomber to bomber?
« on: February 10, 2000, 04:07:00 PM »
Why are the gunner positions different in each of the bombers? For instance in a B17 key 2 is position 1 which is the top turret, but in a B26 key 2 is position 1 which is the Ball turret???

Now this mix up occurs with all of the other positions which prevents a pilot from saving these positions on a stick button(or hat) so he can quickly jump from top to tail to nose while in any bomber. You can do that in the B17, but when you switch to the B26 the same buttons now refer to totally different positions??

First is there a fix for this??

Second, even if there is a fix, why program it this way?

I hope future patches will correct this so that each position corresponds to the same gunner position such as #2 is always top etc.

This will become especially important as additional bombers are introduced.

only problem I have is remembering which key is which waist gun.  I'll want right waist and end up in the left waist =)

When you take a look into keymapping, you see that those gunner position keys are just named as "position #", not as "ball turret, waist gun, top turret..."

Thanks Fishu, but what I mean is that once you set up a stick so that a certain button moves you to say position #2 for the top turret gunner on a B17 that same button used in a B26 moves you to position #2 again, but this time position #2 is for the tail gunner.

As a result you can't change from bomber to bomber and use the same set up button presses on a joystick to go to the same gunner positions, because the positions in each bomber are different for each type of gunner??

As far as I understand it key maping wouldn't help, unless you changed the map every single time you switched from one bomber to the next?  Now if I'm wrong, please let me know how to do it.

The easiest fix would be to program all positions as the same gunner positions. For example position #2 would always be a top turret gunner on all bombers now and in the future. This would be easy for Hitech/Pyro to do and would solve the problem for ever.

Ranger Bob;

I know exactly what you mean.  I use a programable joystick as well.  The gunner positions I had programed worked until the B-26 was introduced.  I took them out of my joystick macro after that.

To be more descriptive, below is what I feel is needed.  As an example; I have included the bombers currently in the set.   I have also added one not in the set for demonstration, the IL-2.  Any gun position for any bomber should hold to the formula.

Position 1: Cockpit (B17/B26/IL2)
Position 2: Chin (B17/B26)
Position 3: Lower Ball (B17 only)
Position 4: Upper Ball (B17/B26/IL2)
Position 5: Left Waist (B17/B26)
Position 6: Right Waist (B17/B26)
Position 7: Tail (B17/B26)

This way pressing 7 in any bomber gets you the tail gunners position or pressing 5 gets you the left waist etc...

You can program one macro for every bomber and it would be more consistent and easier to learn.

Thanks for the response.

I have decided to post this in the BUGS area of the BBS. You might want to post your suggestions there so that Hitech and the others notice it. With only my 1 post they might think it's not that important.

I would like to see them change this before they start introducing more bombers.
