Gaming the game (off the map)

Flying off the map has resurfaced as a problem with the neo-maxi-zoom-dweebies using it to thier advantage all too often.

But flying off the map isn't always off the map.  Let's this shot of the map, totally unzoomed, to pinpoint the problems.

Note the green dot in the yellow box, far northeastern corner.  This is a friendly buff on his way to plaster the bish HQ.  He's still on the map, but because of how the marker system works there is no visible marker for him.  He's effective off the map.

The bright red line running across the top of this shot is right at the horizontal grid line extending south.  The area shown by the red line is roughly how far south of a sector line you can fly and have your marker show in the sector north of you.  Now this only becomes a problem in the northern most sector row, where flying along the northern sector line effectively puts you off the map.  Now our industrious friend, shown in this screen shot, flew all the way off the  map.  His dot was last seen above the scale guage, leaving the cream border area.

There is also a slight problem with markers moving east before you actually cross the sector line, and that comes into play on the far eastern edge of the map where our friend is flying (though he's in the eastern most sector column and not abusing that bug).

As said above it is possible to fly totally off the map.  It is also possible to take a task group totally off the map, as shown by some screen shots Ripsnort was trying to defend in another tread not too long ago.

Once upon a time, dinnae flying off the map cause you disconnect when you crossed the border?

Never did, Cave. North and East sides, the fringe is off the "counter" map; South and West sides, the fringe is part of the "counter" map.  So if you scoot along the northern edge of the "Map", you'll be off counter area.

The obvious solution is to get rid of sector counters and in-flight Dar. Then we'd never have any complaints about this happening.

There is a simple solution to the fleet problem.

Designate anything off the map as "land" as far as the fleet waypoint system.  Problem solved.

How about coding in an instant death for any vehicle that leaves the "designated map area"? You fly or sail off the map board and instantly return to the tower.
