Icons revisited
« on: February 10, 2000, 11:58:00 PM »
Okay, I admit it, I'm bored because I can't get into the arena yet  .

Have been going through old films to send to my squadmates lately and an interesting idea occured to me.  This is quite radical so I am only suggesting an experiment here.

Okay here goes,  what if instead of icons we just used trails online?  They would have to be colored yellow or red like the icons are now.  I think they might compensate for the limited abilities of the modern computer monitor and provide the information that is lacking without an artificially accurate readout of other planes distance and estimate of its speed.  I know this would take a little getting used to and some people wouldn't like what it does to the asthetic of the arena (of course are icons any worse?)

Okay sitting back now with interest to see the replies.

Hmmmmmmmm

Then we would use the size of the trail to judge range?

Interesting, reminds me of how contrails make it quite easy to spot other aircraft when you are at altitude.

Well, Hollywood, I sure would like to see contrails at altitude but do not think I need the billboards replaced by a web of red and green  trails and at least with the billboards I have something to read while descending in my chute.

I read a lot.

Seriously, if anyone from Hitechcreations is reading this PLEASE,PLEASE do something about the Icons soon.

This issue is serious to some of us and a slider to turn them from HUGE to OFF would make it easier to spend 30 bucks a month.

I do not want them personally, when I see an Evil Bad Guy coming from 8K it just increases the time I have to spend knowing I am about to be a statistic.

Can adding an option for Icon size be any harder than increasing or decreasing the size of the clipboard or selecting loadouts?

I ask because I really do not know if there is some detrimental effect on the running of the game if this option is offerred.

By detrimental I do not mean to other players.

If Joe Blow wants to see large Icons and I want to see none it is I who am placing myself at a disadvantage so how it affects players is not a problem.

If Joe Blow sneaks up and shoots me down it is my fault and when I select "no icons" I also select "well stupid, you turned 'em off so you may not squeak on the open channel that Joe Blow is cheating."

Besides, I would not even know if he had icons on, or care.

PLEASE HTC??

I like the idea of an icon that has a slider to adjust size.  Also the chess picture should be eliminated and have an icon that looks like:  5000R  or 5000K or 5000B

That way you have the country too as well as distance. He heee if it's red, SHOOT IT!!!
Really don't care what country

The idea to reduce the size of the icons using a user based preference would be a nice feature.

Wow, thanks Popeye, guess I oughta read more, huh?

OK you guys, when you see me you will wonder, does he or does he not have Billboards off?

Not that it will matter anyhow, I am a lousy gunner in bombers and my fighter skills qualify me to be a target that sometimes moves around a bit.

Somebody mentioned another sim that was using translucent icons that got more transparent the farther away they got.  This sounds live a very good idea, but I wonder about the graphics hit they might cause.

Imagine this,

If you turn your icon off with the ctrl i command, the billboards dissapears from the enemy fighter _and_ it dissapears from your own AC too.

But if you choose to leave the billboard on, the billboards shows on the enemy and your own AC. . .

I´m still an bit tired from the weekend so i hope this makes sence . . .

What about our icons growing as they got closer?  At the range that we currently see them they would be small and unreadable, but as the con got to a range that IRL you could get a visual ID on the plane type the icon has grown to it's normal size.  This would still clue you as to it being friendly or foe, but leave you clueless as to plane type until a range that would be a little more realistic.  I don't know if it is feasible but just another idea to throw out into the mix

I am pretty sure of one thing, with no ICONS I can't really play.  I can't see well enough to spot a plane unless I use the sky to highlight its siloette.

I don't have an explanation for it, but these huge icons are distracting.  Yesterday I was saddled up and zoomed in on the dead 6 of a 109 at 200 yards; he was in a shallow dive towards my airbase, and for the life of me I could not see the airframe.  I swear the icon was so huge and so bright, it blinded me!  All I could do was fire a certain distance below the icon and look for hits.
