Destructable Bridges & Tactical Rail System Discussion
« on: November 04, 2008, 10:45:20 AM »
Alright, It's been wished, talked about, and some more but I'd like to put it all in one topic so we can give our thoughts, opinions, suggestions, and rants about it ( if any ).

Here's my views on it; It's greatly needed. We need destructible bridges and a tactical rail system which is selectable by right clicking the map and clicking "Rail system". Many Jug pilots like myself would love to see this new addition because it would give us a another dimension to the game besides the typical Run & Gun quake style fighting.

It would give us the opportunity to actually have some tactical target of importance to strike/strafe/dive bomb. It would be a great addition because:

  • It could be used to tactical cripple a countries ability to resupply bases, which would render a selected base resupply route inoperative
  • Would actually give us low level straffers the chance to put our Heavy ammo and ordnance package to use such as disrupting a countries time it take to resupply a selected base
  • Opens up a whole list of new mission styles
  • The rail system could be selectable, just as the Vehicle spawn points

Here's a video of a bridge bombing run in IL2:

View 0-45 seconds into the film.

It shouldn't be too hard to model destructible bridges nor plot a railroad type system on the game map & i personally think it would help the game play overall. What's not to like about adding Destructible Bridges and a Railroad system that gives the ability to put some hurting on a countries resupply percentage.

I know my personal reasons are kinda short but I'm sure they're alot of people who would love to express their opinions on this topic.   :salute

I was thinking about this the other day and completely agree.  I would say that the bridges could be down for as long as ammo bunkes and barracks are down for on the bases.  Then after a certain amount of time they get repaired.

Love the idea Talon! even some small towns/rail yards where convys start from would be nice. Was trying to think of a way where you could actually capture rail yards and convoy starting positions. Just something other than bases to capture and defend.

Very good idea!!!  :aok     +1
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes.

I noticed that some time ago the 'Strat' level of the game was diminished somewhat, to the point where hitting strategic targets doesn't have the same impact it once did. I think I'm right in saying that you can't now seriously cripple an enemy's fuel reserve - you can't bring it down to 25% - but I might be wrong.

Anyway, crippling the resupply of a local field by bringing down bridges is an excellent - and 'realistic-type-thing' - idea. We don't model moving armies in this game <thinks: A 'virtual army on land moving like a fleet'?> - we capture towns instead - so adding air-to-ground looks pretty cool to me, and bridges are a natural target as in RL.
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

Not a railroad bridge and doesn't affect strat, but it is a tactical target...

Easy in-game again.

I think it would be great...
For strat reasons, and trainbuster reasons...
That pic would be a fixed cantilever rail/road bridge...
Repair it with bridge supps...

WTH, while we are talkin bridges, lets have it all!!!

Also great, would be a bailey bridge...
You just use "bridge supplies" to build it...
One M3 carries 1 pont and span..

A Forced crossing of a river would be a great squad/group
operation. Build the bridge under enemy fire.. Or defend
it from capture.. LOL, or defend it WHILE you build it...

Gamewise, it would serve to bring ppl into the critical combat
area, increasing the intensity of combat.. IMO, its more fun
when there is a goal to the fighting!!!

Hmmm??

Oops, we would need maps that have "bridgeable obstacles"
as well.. Already have lots of bridges that serve no purpose..

"What is the best way to take a bridge? Both ends at once!!!"
From the movie, A Bridge Too Far....

I'd love to try it!!!

Thinking of the same thing would be cool to put AA there or AT.

Along with the addition of destructible bridges (maybe HTC could outsource the coding of this?) it would also be nice to have some destructible landforms like trees, those houses that get in the way while on the deck, or the barbed wire on beaches. Destructible by explosives of course. :aok

An example: One HQ Mission I posted for the Bish went up to 28-30K into the heart of Rookland. THAT was an obvious threat to a tangible country-wide resource, Rookland-wide radar. Hence, the Rooks were smart in gathering up a massive intereceptor force consisting of a variety of high performance craft. The result: a very hot and fun battle.

If the strat system could be similar to the example stated above, that's where the fun is at. It promotes fun fights, is satisfying to the strategic crowd, it brings all of the different elements of fun together on both sides. Just my humble thought.

A short term destructable strat could be the barges and supply convoys that maintaine the bases.

Put auto ack on them and make keeping them destroyed a requirement for a feild capture. Use tiffis for what they were good at. With the barge give it an ack infested dock that has to be defended along with defending the barge traffic. Let guys spawn PT's with the barge to provide escort.

With the convoy make the source point destroyable along with GV spawn points to attack or defend it. If left alone the barge dock and convoy source point should regenerate to 100% in 10-15 minutes. Allow feild supply deliveries to speed up the regeneration. Make at least one bridge along the convoy road an ack infested destroyable target causing convoys to back up waiting for the bridge to rebuild.
