Night Time And Other Things
« on: November 03, 2008, 10:50:34 PM »
I've always had a few questions on my mind about the things , major ones , missing from the game in the main arena , where everyone plays. For one , we have a constant ugly , old sun that ive seen everyday I play. Well , hitech also gave us ugly sun but with a bit of orange in the sky and called it sunrise/sunset. I am not particularly happy with it. I think that night time / day time should be switched every hour or so with diffrent shades in the minutes of the hour resulting to the full day / or night. This is would just make the game more scenic and a change in atmosphere. Now , some people are going to say that night time isn't agreeable to game play. Others say diffrent. Well , the way I was taught was that when problems occur compromise is the best solution to fit everyones needs and wants into one. Thats why it should constantly shift from hour to hour for change in the general appearance of the game itself. I've also thought of a few new things that would look excellent and bring new looks to the game. Maps as we know it have bases as usual , which is fine , and dirty old green patches all over the place. I think they're should be diffrent maps constantly circulating in the main arenas , which is the game due to the constant numbers in their , for a change in cenery. I was in special events and saw an excellent desert map. I also saw a snowmap. And other little things that would be a nice change. Perhaps even a bit of front , change the color of the snow a bit. Add new clouds in more places in the sky to give it a feeling similar to you looking outside your window on a 737 aboard SouthWest Airlines but in an f4u4 for instance. Instead of having wispy looking flat things hovering in a few blotches in the sky. Little things like this I believe would improve the overall realism of the game and bring more interest to players due to the new types of maps.

When I played in late 2001 to late 2002 the sun and clouds were beautiful. We had night time that would last maybe 15 minutes and when the sun came up it was like the real thing. Light would begin shining all over your cockpit and you could actually turn into it and see. Ships and town buildings would all glow orange and i got to say, I really miss that.

I came back June of 2007 and did see a nice sunset/ sunrise on one of the maps just briefly until it was taken away. I'd love to see it back.

We had a nice moon too

This has been brought up many many many times. But things are the way they are... I'm sure now that more resources can be used in different areas, I'd assume some new things are on the way.  :aok

The problem is technology. The more eye candy, the more computer you need to run it, oh and night time.... do a search, HT said it ain't going to happen.

The way things are set up now is so things are reused. The ground looks like it does because they only use a few tiles to make it and just repeat them. This keeps the files smaller. Details which are ok could be much more intense, but then your running into polycounts that would choke a "cray" computer. HTC has to make a compromise between looking good, and being playable for the masses. Even making the eye candy for those whos computers can handle it and be able to turn it down for those that can't is catering to the few. I'd rather see them spend time on adding a plane or two that everyone can use instead of wasting time on a "sunset" that only a few will see.

I ran on a much weaker machine in 2001-2002 and don't ever remember the time of day affecting frame rates.

In offline mode you can change the time of day very easily. You can also make the day go by either fast or slow. Even though it only lasted 15-20 min, HTC has eliminated night time all together because of the complainers.. which is ok I guess . What I do miss is the sun sets and sun rises that were also eliminated because of it. It's just a timing issue that I know could easily be brought back with a few clicks of an HTC mouse.

There was only one map that had it still when I came back in 07 and it was quickly taken out to match the rest of the maps for some reason.

I have no pictures of it but I could easily make one.
