I would imagine as with US planes his tail is red because he's a flight leader or it's a unit designator. Take a look at the P-47 TARHEEL HAL.

LOL...I was just gonna mention Tar Heel Hal when I started reading this thread.  I got some pics of that plane last time I was in Galveston...it has a bright orange tail that you can see for miles.  Seems to me that you wouldnt want it to be that easy to see now would ya?

That tail has a nice accent for them big red meatballs. Makes framing the shot easier.

Tarhell Hal.... my god, this thing is a disgrace to the P47 world. I never understand how someone could have so little taste. For the french speackers, I call it :"tarlouze Al".

I like the camo of the KI because it is not dark. I think we have a lot of dark planes in AH, u see the camo only when u are very close from the aircraft.

P47's had red nose too (56th FG) and some even red tail (61 FS)   Red nose maybe said:"shoot me", but the red tail meant:"my wingman will shoot you"

Why having a red tail when we can have the whole plane red?

Put this sticker next to the one Mitsu created

Man that Japanese plane is one ugly piece of trash! It amazes me that it even flies.

It's a Ki-61, the Japanese version of the Bf-109, more or less, for those who don't know. (If there are any of you left in this game... damn braniacs, I tells ya'!)  It uses a licensed version of the DB 601 engine.  The Japanese stressed manueverability, so they increased wing size to reduce the loading, did some other modifications.

It looks just like this in the dreaded (aka POS Ace) Fighter Ace, and is one of the better rides in that game.
