A HTC hosted "Current Server Time" webpage/webtool
« on: November 01, 2008, 06:54:47 AM »
From one of the Battle of Britain scenario forums, per Kermit's request:
Does HTC or AHevents have a "Current Server Time" clock somewhere on their website those looking for it can find it?  This way you guys can organize all events by "Server Time", and those wondering how it translates to their local time can easily do so (how easy that will be I don't know, but I'd imagine the more functionality a it has designed into it the more complicated it's creation gets).

Being as some people around the world adjust their clocks tomorrow morning back and hour while others will not, this would be particularly handy in the near future.

Just a FYI for tonights BofB event.

The UK put our clocks back last weekend so the frame for us will be due to start at 19:00 GMT.

next week after the Americans decide it is no longer summer the event will be back to 20:00 GMT.

Actually there is a quick, but round-about way to check the current time in another timezone from the boards.  The events team lists their events in Eastern US time.  If you know a BBS user in that timezone, you can click on their profile and their local time is listed.  For instance, AKDogg is one of the CMs that lives in the Eastern timezone, and a glance at his profile will give you the current local time for him.

Yes but in the case of BoB frame one, will it help those in europe who set their clocks back the weekend before the rest of us did in the US?

There are means that people can use to calculate the time difference, but what I'm asking for is more of a "We fly at 3:00, meet at 2:30" anouncement and a clock somewhere really easy to find (like at the bottom/top corner of the HTC or AHEvents homepage) that anounces and keep track of that current time, so someone can just go to it, see it's 2:00 on "the clock" and knows to be there in 20 minutes.  They dont have to crack open an atlas or hunt down a means of converting 2:30 to their *umpty*:30.... and in the case of BoB frame one, if they did this prepatory calculation over a week in advance of frame one, and did not know we here in the USA don't set out clocks back until 7 days after the europeans do, we get a bit of a mess... it would be more suportive of the event that draws on players from around the world, and helpful for more of those people if they had a means to check a posted clock via a AH webpage, half as periodicaly as they check the AH forums or the scenarios rules/info/etc at AHEvents in my opinion.

Or you could just use this:  http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Well, if the Europeans logged on to the boards after their clock change, and it displayed their correct local time, it should have.

What you suggested could be done in theory by being tied in to the boards user database, but it would require a custom mod from scratch.  So it is unlikely that will ever happen unless an independent author happens to make a mod with those functions.

To my knowledge, the AHEvents site is not on the HTC server, and is maintained and sponsored by the events team.  I would just be happy with the time, effort, and resources, they've put into the extensive info they already provide since it is all on a volunteer basis.

all times should be in UTC/GMT, problem solved. possibly followed by the US Eastern Time (since most players are from the US)
