How much lead on 37mm's
« on: May 07, 2002, 02:18:44 AM »
How much lead do you use when manning the 37mm's on the ground or on the ships ?

I have tried every combination and I simply cannot find the magic lead...  The only kills I generally get with these guns are if the bogey is coming dead at me...

Also what is the range on the 5" guns on the fleet ?
I have noticed that I can get long range when in AA mode but only when the bogies are higher up...  I have shot at closer targets but they are lower and I see no black puffs of smoke.

Thanks Guys, this is driving me nuts...

Feel the Power, young jedi.

Thats the way to get a firing solution in an ack.

In WWII the germans estimated, that they need around 3000 shots for one destroyed plane.
They used Kommandogeräte (a combination of measuring system and analog computer) to estimate the approximate position of the target, if it is flying straight and level at the same speed. We do not have such assistance.

When you are sitting on the ground and want to hit a plane flying by, the only constant you have, is the flying path and speed of your shell and even that have a dispersion.
The distance on your targets icons might be porked by lag, even so its flying path.
The speed of your target you can judge into very slow, slow, medium, fast, 262.

Don't compare yourself to the miracle AI ack on the fields, that kills you, when you are jinking at top speed, but miss you, if you fly straight and level at stall speed

In an ack the closure rate between you and your target is much higher compared to airborne gunning.  So start early shooting about 2k for planes going straight into you.
On planes flying by don't shoot over 1k. Would be pure luck if you hit anything above it.

Do not use gun zoom. You loose to much of your sight field that you need for aiming.
Take a big lot of lead on targets flying by.
Dont trust the tracers.
Learn by the results.

So in the reticule sightther is four-five rings?  Should these be used as an indicator of what sort of distances?  Do hits often account from a FS outside the rings?

Log into the TA for a while, Up from a field other than A1 if you want GV's to work.

Get someone to fly drone for you.

Hit Control Tab, point sight at your target, hit tab again.

Put the crosshairs on the new green crosshairs!

37mm with the iL2's will take a bit more practice, but they shoot very flat.

the range on the 5" is well beyond icon range >6000yd  (i got 2 kills the other day lobbing from about 10k onto a field)

as for 40mm soft guns on the field, I can hit bombers overhead at 4000-4500 yds occasionally. at 3000yds, somewhat reliably. I do not use the sights, in fact i cursor and pgup as far away from the sights as possible, i have a dot drawn on the middle of my screen that I use as a sight. the actual sights actually end up blocking view of the target at certain angles

Don't look too confused.  They may have been 37mms back in 2002 when this zombie thread was originally posted.
