My Daughter's impending school trip
« on: November 09, 2008, 08:52:47 AM »
Man am I p.o'ed
My daughter just told me that for history class, that they are going down to the Canadian Warplane History Museum.
Dammit, I've never been there...I'm Jealous.

Then she tells me that in History, they're discussing WWII.
"Oh, really? How's that going?" I ask.

"Well", she says "they have us playing this weird board game"

"Really?" I ask. "What do you have to do?"

"Well, You have the russians, Germans, Japanes, Americans and British. It's like risk, but you have to decide what you buy on your next turn depending on how much territory you have."

"Get out!" I cry to my dismay.... "You're playing Axis and Allies!!!"

"I think so...yeah, that's the name" She says.

Is it too late for me to re-enroll in Grade 10?

You must be in Canada?

In the states, they don't even broach the
subject of WWII.. They Omit it entirely.. At least
it was omitted in my time, and my kids time as well...

They teach right up to the Great Depression...
Then start again at the Social Upheaval of the 60s...

I just chalk it up to the socialist influence in our
public education system...

God forbid that they teach how the greatest generation
saved the free world in war, and then REBUILT IT AFTERWARD!!!
That would espouse the glories and success of Capitalism..
Can't have that, can we???

Ridley, if you find an angle to get re-enrolled let me know, they'll have 2 new, albeit older classmates.
Good to know that the school system is teaching the next generation about what the greatest generation did for us.

Yep that's how it was when I was in school. hell the only wars they ever talked about were the revolution, Napoleonic war, and civil war.

And to get this back on topic...

Ridley1, you should get on the chaperon list for that field trip. :aok

Or at the least send your daughter with a decent digital point and shoot camera and instructions to fill the card with pictures of airplanes.

Are you kidding?  In my history classes we would learn about the revolutionary war, skip to the civil war, mention ww1 and the depression, and then spend the rest of the year on ww2.  I was born in '79 if that's important.

Edit: I see you're 25 years older than me.  The difference is a vastly changed political climate between when you and I received our education.  Yours had the LBJ legacy, and mine had Reagan.

All of the history books I've been given have a chapter on the Revolutionary War, the war of 1812, the Civil War, WWI, and WWII, and then usually a chapter that includes Korea and Vietnam combined.

My high school history courses covered World War II and in fairly good detail as well.  And my favorite class I took was Military History, Mr. Dallas rocked!

OMG!  AvA board game for school!  Oh man I'm jealous.

I hope the teacher does a good job of keeping the lessons interesting but also getting across how much WW2 changed the world.

I've got the AvA board game at home, no one wants to play.
