Perhaps I should have been a little more clear, ODBAL. There really isn't any real covers by major artists. But I have been to enough bars and gigs to hear covers that I enjoyed much more than GL's original version.

Oh, OK.  I wonder if hearing it live made it more appealing?  Nothing is better than live music to me, I won't even purchase music unless it was recorded live.  Thanks for clarifying Nefarious.

Hearing Gordon sing it live is almost earily beautiful. Ive seen him live several times and you can tell the song, and men behind it, are important to him. Plus he's one of those artists that are actually better live. He's one of Canadas more gifted sons I believe and a great artist.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one song I can say that every cover that I have heard has been better than Gordon Lightfoot's.

I once sung it very very drunk at my local watering hole , let me tell ya it was bad, very very bad.   :rofl

Great song!!

I am going to do something rarely seen on this board, admit I was wrong and apologize.  I wasn't aware that yesterday was the anniversary of the EF tragedy.  I thought you had perhaps come across the song and decided to put the lyrics up on the board, it is a great song.  So me, being me put up what I would consider the total opposite of a great song just to be random.  I guess I would have expected you to write some sort of tribute of your own (something along the lines of "RIP Crew of the EF, you will never be forgotten") to include with the text of the song.  I did not do it to dishonor the lost sailors memory in any way.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.  :salute

ODBAL, it takes more balls to admit you were wrong.    :salute

As for Gordon's version?   I don't see ANYONE ever singing this song with as much passion and emotion as Gordon's original.   He sang this almost from a "perspective of once being on the ship".    There are odd times I'll hear this tune on the radio and I have to be cautious to focus, as this song has so much detail, your mind "recalls the night".

"Does any man know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" It's hard to beat that for capturing a ship wreck.

I have not heard too many even attempt to cover it, and I do not know of many, if any, that could pull it off. It's one of those songs that just shouldn't be covered.

They used to play that song on the Pittsburgh Rock Station all the time as a joke.  :rofl
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
