« on: November 18, 2008, 09:06:09 AM »
I came across this one,

Made me think, why dont drop tanks do any damage to anything,

Yes, there light but maybe if it was a good drop.. (just watch this clip  :P)

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uIny8caHMhk&feature=related

I know he missed but maybe, what would of happend if he would have hit one of them?

(Im not a big plane buff i dont actualy know, would it take there wing off or something?)

I would think that at the speeds these aircraft were closing on each other that it would definitely cause  damage(possibly catastrophic).  Why they are not coded to do so in AH, I will leave to the experts.

It may be feasible that a fire would cause damage.  Also the weight of the fuel would cause damage but to be able to hit anything with a reasonable amount of accuracy is unreasonable.

Drops were made of papermashe <spelling> and not flighted with fins like a bomb.  Nore was there any type of ignition source.

Not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Scuttlebutt was that ol 320 dropped their tanks thru a cloud layer and hit a Mig comin up under them they didnt even see.

Other kill it got was guns kill on a Mig that came thru cloud layer right up into their gunsite.

Good ol' 320 .. F-105G at Wright Pat now ..or did they send it to the Smithsonian?
Only 105 in the inventory with 2 red stars on the vari-ramps  ..also the last one outta George AFB, long ago.
Heck of a flyby.

A pair of P-38s were credited with sinking a Japaneese transport ship by dropping DTs on the deck and straffing the fuel alight with tracers.  The ship burned 8 hours before it sank.
