Need help with car buying, can't decide
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:37:35 PM »
Ok, well i am 17 and looking to buy a car, And these two cars i can afford. Which one is better?

1. 1991 Honda Accord LX ----> http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/913851216.html

2. 1994 Mazda 626 ES ---->http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/921222889.html

I have talked to the owner of the Mazda(both sellers private owners). And he said it is in exellent condition and that it is the nicest version of the 626 from that year. I did i kelly blue book price check and it shows that he is giving me a good deal.

With the Accord i have only breifly talked to the owner through email. They say the same think. KBB value had it in the fair condition. but the picture show it in great conditon

I am having a difficult time deciding. they are both far away from where i live. (Mazda 1 hour 15min, Accord 2 hours 30min) My mom said that we can't go see them both and its eaither go visit the 626 or accord. Which one do you think is a better buy?

considering if you do live in Winchester, VA you are in a hard spot finding many cars... I'd recommend looking around and trying to get a few in DC in the same area so you can see a few on a Saturday...

both the above are reliable, I think they are both a ton better than a toyota. the Honda will have more accessable parts, there were like a billion of those 91 accords made. I even worked at a honda dealer back in 91 / 92 and really liked that car.

thats my thoughts.

Honda.  I had a '91 Integra (fancy Honda).  Straight up Honda engine.  Nearly 200K miles and ran like a top.  All temps and pressures normal.  And like Mustaine mentioned, easy to find parts for.

Mazda is in bed with Ford.  I've had nothing but trouble from the Mazdas (and Fords) that I've owned.  I'll get flamed for that for sure, but it's the truth.  You want an honest opinion, I give it to you.

Ask yourself this question:  How many Honda owners have you met that complained about them?  I hear only testimonials, not complaints.  Now ask youself that same question about Mazda owners.......see for yourself.

What I have done in the past is simply ask people who own the type of car I am interested in.  At the gas station or supermarket parking lot.  Ask them how they like the car...would they recommend it.....is there anything they don't like, etc.  You will find most Honda owners pleased with them.

Go with the Honda. I have a CRV with 145,000 on it and the only thing it really needs is a valve lash adjustment. I fully expect it to last past the 300,000 mark.

The mid 90's Mazdas have nothing to do with Ford. Both of your choices are reliable and rust prone. The Mazda has a simpler suspension than the Honda with less wearing parts. The Honda is more likely in a need serious suspension replacement. I would go with the Mazda.
