21 inch monitor.

3 clicks up on zoom.

Still can't make out much detail at 300 yds and greater.

Why?

The standard (no zoom) view has a field of view (FOV) of 90 degrees.  A 21" monitor at about 17.5" from your face gives you a 49 degree FOV. So everyone is flying around AH (in normal view) as if they are seeing the world through a ultra wide angle lens (something like a 27 mm lens on a 35 mm camera).  That makes everything look small.  If you zoom the view then, of course, you have to use the 45 deg side views or you'll miss parts of the space around you.

Of course the solution is simple: get 5 big screen TVs and 5 sync'd CPUs to drive them.  Place them in a box around your cockpit to have a full 360 deg (and up) FOV     Naw.. I don't think I'll try it... I have a feeling I'd be cleaning my lunch off the TV screens.

I've had no problem with 1280x1024 resolution to see birds..
I can identify lancasters profile from 8k away or so

Yes Yes ... ...

Fishu, I am convinced that you are super human and superior in every way.   I suspect that you are at least, in some way, closely related to the Kent family.

But...

For the rest of us things are different.

I can see each individual leave on a tree at 90 yards.

I can the tell the difference between a Honker and a Cackler (Canadian Geese) at close to a 1/4 mile away.  This is d440 on my monitor.

I can tell a P-51 from a F4U at 1.5 miles.  This is d2.6 on my monitor.

I can see a crop duster accurately at 2 miles.  This is d3.5 on my monitor.

    I can't tell the difference between a P-38 and a 109 on my monitor at d500.

Mnio take a video camera and film everything you just mention on standard zoom and look at it thru the same 20 viewable are. It will look samll also. The view is scaled down to fit in the monitor. go 800x600 it will make things larger and graineir.

See if you had a human head on the body everything would be the right size , but instead you have the bovine head about 3 time to big so everything is smaller.
