Software?!?!?Fraps won't do.
« on: December 03, 2008, 09:47:33 PM »
Hey guys,

Well I am making a new R/C video of me flying on my R/C Sim.(Real Flight G3.5)
I try using fraps to record my vids but it cuts my frame rates in half and the vid comes out choppy.
I was interested to know if anyone knew of good programs like fraps that I could try.

Thanks.

Any type of program such as fraps is going to tax your system during recording.  You're running a game and then you're recording video at the same time which is writing a lot of date and taking more processing power away from the game itself.  So I suspect that possibly your system isn't up to par to handle both at once.  I am not aware of any program that would do the same as Fraps that would do a fraction of the FPS hit you're receiving.

Hey Dugy, I need more information from you.  When you record with FRAPS, your recording framerate will be in RED.  What is the RED number when you are recording?

When fraps is running and while you are not recording, your framerate number will be in yellow.  This number may be hard to read as it may change every second.  What yellow number is it usually when you are playing your game?

How fast is your processor and how much memory do you have?
Time's fun when you're having flies.

I only have 27GB of Mem in my comp (not alot but gets me by) and with all the stuff i have on it I have 6GB freeSpace.

Yellow: 50-63
Red    : 30-18-7

Its not necessarily Fraps but the sim when fraps is recoding.

Thanks Kermit.

Dugy, do this for me, it will help us a bit.
Click Start - > Run - > type in dxdiag and hit Ok.
When the window pops up, tell me what the box says under System Information.  The window should look something like this.
In game callsign: not currently flying
Flying off and on since Warbirds

What is not normal is your "Red: 30-18-7".  Your recording frame rate should not be changing during a recording.

What have you set your recording frame rate to?

Select the "30 fps" option.
Select the "Half-size" option.

With these 2 options selected, you should be able to record just fine.

Your framerate during recording should be 30fps, which is normal, which is half of your normal frame rate.

It is important to let me know if this does or does not work.

If your frame rate drops below 30FPS while recording with FRAPS, then your video will end up with stutters and what appear to be pauses as FRAPS fills the gaps with the same frame over and over agin until a new frame is ready.

FRAPS is a great utility, but it can only do so much.  Video must be recorded at 30FPS, or higher, in order to have all the frames required to render a movie that is without apparent pauses and stutters.
